I think you mean endgames. A pawn ahead is in most cases a endgame situation. Many mistakes are made in the endgame.

No I mean in the middlegame. The title of the book is in the topic.
Defending when ahead. Me thinks herr Steinitz is rolling in his grave.
You can have initiative and still be behind in material. For instance when you gambit?

Aawards is a prolific writer and well respected trainer. If you are under 2000 strength, his “Excelling at… “ books are pretty good, but his later books, beginning with Practical Chess Defense and continuing on through the Attacking manuals and his Grandmaster Prep series are for more advanced players. I’m not saying you couldn’t get anything out of them, but they are pretty difficult to get through. Two books I can recommend for any strength, though, are Colin Crouch’s book “How to Defend in Chess,” subtitled Lessons from the World Champions, and one of the older Andy Soltis books, “The Art of Defence in Chess.”
I'm looking for a book to look a bit more into defending (especially when up in material but having no initiative).
How are Aagaard's books?
