Please tell me what you think of my new chess set. The Chessmen are boxwood and ebonised boxwood, 3" old english staunton set from Regencychess.

The board is a custom made design, built by myself in Wales. The light squares are a fine material called "dog flap box carboard" that I got from a company called Argos. The dark squares are ebonised through a method called WH Smith permanent pen. Square size is approximately 1.75". I think it is quite effective. You may notice a small blemish on the H file, but when playing I don't tend to notice it.

Nice when you do it yourself! :) D.I.Y. And that is a BIG board. But a bit ugly that fold, crinkle. get a bigger (EDIT: not bigger, but without fold) uniform carton?

9/10.

How about that you yet still cut a small black and white squares (8*8/2 = 32 each other (BIG job)) from white and black clean cardboard and glue them on top of that? So you wear that cardboard as your basis?

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't currently have any black (or equivalent) cardboard, but perhaps in the future I can upgrade my board with your advice!

Revel in the glory of the corrugated cardboard! The only way this could be more win would be if you had used an old pizza box. Cool

Now I feel like a idiot for buying vinyl... 9/10

The idea is that when you're playing a Blitz game and the pieces hit those g file creases en route to a mating attack, they peel over like ninepins and reconstruction is pointless ... but Shh ... only the OP knows that! Sealed

I was waiting for someone to notice the G file. There was a slight error in manufacture, as the board was cut as 8x7. I fixed this by cutting the H file out and affixing it with a strip of duct tape along the bottom. This can be an advantage, as the H file will fold underneath when in transit reducing the overall width of the board, making it a great travel set too!! As for blitz I don't really play it because I'm not very good at it.

Frankly, the cardboard chessboard would be better off with a set of nice plastic pieces.Somehow, the wooden chessmen beg for a good wooden chessboard, just my opinion..I would hasten to add,I do like your chessboard, just not paired with wooden pieces though.

If you like it, that's all that matters! Enjoy it! I think all chess sets are wonderful. Some more than others. But this is definitely a fine set.

Thw 2 narrow fold line strips would be perfect for rank and file labels. I expect to see Chinese knock offs within a month!

The Chess Pieces look good but, the board eeek.!Surprised

I like it.  Unique and functional, sort of like kh95's set carved from unicorn horns and rainbows, but not exactly.

How about red and blue coloured cartons? Or papers. Go to the shop and buy, they are cheap. Ask your mama or papa litle pennies. Or green and yellow colors? Happy coloured beatiful chessboard. Black and white is dull. And paint those wooden pieces too.

Next, you should sketch a board on that wooden table with a Sharpie.

I have some nice pieces of cabinet grade plywood (or whatever nice plywood is called) and want to make a small table out of it. Instead of painting the squares I am thinking of staining the wood, then gluing the vinyl board to it, then going over the top of the board with some kind of darker finish, maybe a dark varnish to cut down the white. Then going over the whole shebang with matte poly finish. The OP did great! Even better when he beats folks on his cardboard board. I like the contrast between the squares. :)

The crinkle is to throw off the opponent.

I don't know, wood is closer to cardboard than plastic. plastic pieces/vinyl board. wood pieces/something that comes out of a tree board.

Thank you for your comments so far, to both those who appreciate it, and those who do not. After all, some of the worlds finest art work still divides opinions!

This very night I gave it a test run in a match against my 4 year old daughter, and the feel of the chessmen against the board was sublime. Though I think she must prefer Chinese chess, as her set up and piece movement did not entirely follow the rules of chess as I know them!

Thank you to jkborders for his fantastic piece of advice, as you can see from the image below I have now labeled the ranks and files using Tipp-Ex (not your unbranded correctional fluid nonsense). The folds look almost created intentionally for this purpose, as if I had planned ahead in my sub-conscience.

I have also initialled my board in the corner as an official product, a la House of Staunton. So if you see similar boards crop up in the online market, you can be wary of cheap duplications should I decide to go commercial!

Please continue to post your opinions, I appreciate your feed back.

I think you should cut out the whole g file and also the whole 8th rank, then swap those two around, so that you'll have the crease line on the edge of the board, and it won't be that noticeable. Undecided
