The book is too advanced for your rating.....

a better choice of a Silman book for you would have been....

"The Amateur's Mind" by Jeremy Silman....

https://www.amazon.com/Amateurs-Mind-Turning-Misconceptions-Mastery/dp/1890085022/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1490186709&sr=8-1&keywords=the+amateurs+mind

There exist many chess.com forum threads on both these books which you can search for....an example...

https://www.chess.com/blog/Chessmo/review-the-amateurs-mind

https://www.chess.com/search?q=the+amateurs+mind

perhaps you can cancel and change your order...

There are many books in the following list which would be appropriate for you...

Good Chess Books for Beginners and Beyond...

It's a waste of money, especially for someone rated 800.

When does HTRYC become Not a waste of money? I was gonna buy "Winning Chess Strategies" which I believe is co-authored by Silman and Seirawan, just curious.

How to Reassess Your Chess by Jeremy Silman is more appropriate for players rated above 1600.  For players rated below that, it would be like trying to read a Calculus book before you have mastered algebra....

That is for 1400 - 2200

If you are in the market for Reassess Your Chess 4 edition HOS has it for a pretty good discount. I just like HB books much better than PB and the price difference isn't that much considering the big discount on the HB and it is signed too for what that is worth.

In the '90's, I bought a copy of the 1st Edition for all my serious high school tournament players (1100 USCF or more) and that book had a greater effect on them more than any other: the imbalances, a Knight on the 5th rank is more powerful than a Bishop, etc.

I recently got the 4th Edition and the Workbook (658 and 423 pages compared to about 200 in the original edition!), but I haven't started looking into it.  I was advised by someone to read Silman's "The Amateur's Mind" first so i got that one too.

MickinMD: That's an interesting data point. I'm always interested in reports from the field.

I read it a few years ago and was excited, but then found it hard to use Silman's insights in real OTB play. I'll still take Nimzovich's "My System" over Silman's "Reassess."

Then again, when you're learning something, any book providing information you never heard before can be a Big Deal. If you're an 1100 player and imbalances are a new idea, that's huge.

I think Silman himself gave the range as 1400-2100.
