Can anyone recommend a decent chess set within £400 please?

Staunton with heavy pieces, what are you using guys?

These guys have a pretty solid reputation around here.  I have one of their very early ebony sets when they were California based and it was a steal off Ebay.  Actually though I think only the name is the same.  Anyway, I don't think they are brick and mortar, but they do have a UK phone #.

I went ahead and did a forum search for you.  Many, many pages of threads.  I expect some of the serious collectors to quickly respond since talking about your favorite sets is almost as much fun as owning them.

This outfit has a few quality control issues now and then, but bang for the buck are hard to beat...

Hi are you looking for a new set or would you like a Antique set , Or so what size chess set ie 4.4 / 4inch or 3.5 to which size chess board ?

As this gives a good insight to what best would help you, In your seach ? My taste is for the Antique Jaques  Staunton from 1849 to 1900's which is no longer a cheap find ie via ebay etc or Auction houses / Dealers , But you can get lucky

Which leave buying a new set if this is the case would go for the Noj sets as are hand made .

Here a Antique Staunton set from 1900 needs some restorers add 100 pounds give or take !

not a bad set other wise .

Wow, those prices are insane.  I know Chessbazaar is just trying to clear out odds and ends from their inventory, but 70% off is amazingly low for some very nice sets.  If I didn't have too many already.....

400 pounds spending limit means Official Staunton or House of Staunton is your best bet. Noj is just a tad more expensive. If I were you? Get a flagship 18xx design from OS or save up for a Noj.

edit; if you want heavy Staunton pcs, OS wins hands down.
