Recommended chess software for study?

I'm thinking of ordering Fritz 13. Does it allow you to practice playing predetermined or random positions against the computer? Can I "import" games databases from the Web, or do I need to buy the expensive Chessbase database?

Any other programs that supplement Fritz well?

I can't answer most of those but I think Fritz 13 comes with a database of over a million games included.

my advice is checking out chesspositiontrainer 4 which you can use for free for a few days. the program is made specific for hammering openingmoves into your head and have some interestning trainingfeatures

Outside of the extreme aggression this evoked, what program is that? Sounds interesting.

1)  Yes, you can do this Fritz.  (Load predetermined positions and play either side against any engine you choose.)

Of course, you can also do this with "WinBoard" or "Scid vs. PC" or just about any other freeware program.  You don't "have" to order Fritz to do something like this.

2)  And yes, you can download and then import millions of grandmaster chess games from the web.  Again, you don't "have" to order anything.  For example, "The Week in Chess" website offers hundreds of thousands of games, at a minimum, available for download.  Other websites offer even larger free databases of chess games.  And yes, Fritz will load these and dozens of other freeware chess programs will load them too.

3)  The Chessbase database probably supplements Fritz well, as both are are made by the same company.
