Refinished chess board

I got this board several years ago and there was nothing really wrong with it.  Except that it had a very high gloss finish that I didn't like.  I attempted to remove the finish and found that it was extremely thick and resistant.  My woodworker brother offered to take the board to his shop and refinish it.  Several months later here it is.  He not only stripped and refinished it but he added a thin mahogany border around the whole thing.  Beautiful and looks good with the Spanish pieces, I think.

That's beautiful. The mahogany fits in very nicely. Adds a nice touch without it being distracting. I also agree with your choice of converting from high gloss to matte finish for a board. I think glossy pieces are really nice but glossy boards in my opinion can be a bit distracting and a bother with many lighting setups.  Reminds me of one horrible OTB rated game lighting setup. There were recessed ceiling and a ceiling fan. My board being directly below the fan had this weird strobe like shadow/no shadow thing going.

@oldquaker that is such a stately board. Magnificent - quiet class.👍👍👍

Yes, yes, it is indeed beautiful! But….how does it play? Are you happy with removing the glossy finish? Thanks for posting.
