Reliability of Square Off Boards

Greetings and Salutations!

I've been mulling over the purchase of a Square Off board (as well as a DGT Centaur -- which would absolutely be my pick if it featured chess.com integration), and was wondering if the community had any thoughts on the reliability of the mechanism inside the Square Off boards.

Are the S.O. boards known for being mechanically solid in the long run or no?

Here's the forum you should be reading...

Oh and you should probably know that the second generation boards should be in general distribution this summer.  The Neo and Swap are faster, quieter, and cheaper.  Might be worth a google...

Ahhhh... Unless coming across a really great deal, seems like holding off a bit may be the smartest choice.

Thanks!

You're probably correct, but way too late for me...wink.png Oh boy, I'll have it for my birthday; well Christmas then, maybe this birthday?  Sigh sad.png  Pandemics and border disputes happen; the company seems reputable enough though.

The next generation will be perhaps better. I had horrible experience with SquareOff. They can break quite easily. The support was really a mess. I had once 3 devices at home instead of one because they were badly organised. I purchased device 1 (the more expensive one), they sent device 2, and after I told them this they send me again device 2!! Hilarious!
I like thought the concept and purchased two devices, but my Novag Adversary is much more reliable than SquareOff, and it was built in the 1980s. Just to tell you: if the warranty is over you can throw away your device, as they will not fix it for you, even if you offer to pay for the job.

I had the same horrible experience with SquareOff. The movement mechanism stopped working when it was 3 months out of warranty. Just 15 months old.

They were awful. Took months to respond. Send them lots of information, videos .. They said it might be a bad Motherboard. Offered to sell me a replacement for $150 + shipping !

I would have to repair myself .. and if the MB was not the issue .. then no refund ..  Awful behavior for a new company.
