Haven't got it yet. I also bought an extremely large working model of a paddle steamer, made maybe 80 years ago for the same amount again.

I bought it blind except for one picture but it looks very real. Some damage to one piece. In original box.

It's a St George set but I think two or three pieces have been lost and there are Staunton pieces substituted for them. My intention is to either complete it or sell the pieces to someone who wants to complete a set. I already have several old full chess sets which didn't cost me much or I found them.

Just got back home. Was off the grid for 9 days. Everyone should do that now and then. No calls no nothing. Just R&R. feels so good. Did not even want to turn the computer on today but WOW WHAT A SET Now I have to see the exchange rate and see if any sets are still left. THEY ARE GEORGEOUS!! It is over the top.

Hi Carl, when I click on this I don't see any pictures - is there something wrong? I've tried a couple of different browsers. I see this:

The first set is overpriced but hey someone could really want that set. And that would be the one to get at the right price. Missing labels, chipped peices, and a warped box, with a broken lock do not demand $12000
The second set is a joke for that price. I would rather have all the pieces replaced. Wait we can and it is called a reproduction and at a much better price.
The second one I own so it remains to be seen if you’re right or not, however there is a lot of interest because it can be restored and is an 1849 after all , but I get your point
Is it a real "1849 after all..." ??!
With regards to Theseus's ship - we have a similar concept in the UK called "Trigger's Broom". Trigger was a character on a television program who was a street cleaner, and was proud that he kept the same broom throughout his long career. "It's the same broom I've always had - it's had four new heads and three new handles."

It may be because I'm running Linux Carl. I'll have another look when I get home, I have a windows PC at home.

Works fine from Windows PC, also i-phone (Safari). So I think it's a Linux issue, or I've got old versions of Chrome and Firefox on my Linux pc, or something.

From the backside of the book "Offene Linien", which I can strongly recommend. The pieces and table should be from Uhlmanns participation in the 1966 Olympiad in Havanna.

Uchebuike it was based on a Jaques design , So a kind of remake but not a real Jaques chess set the Havanna set but the table that came with the set wow .

Thank you for the clarification, I would have thought that they were still using some Jaques sets at the time. The table really is stunning! Maybe I will try and buy a similar one in the future.

This is a bit off-topic, but a set sold last night on eBay for £820:

Anyone got any idea why this went for so much? It's not a Jaques, I don't think it's a BCC or an Ayres. it's not even a marked set. It's nice enough but something special.
What am I missing?
Obviously a stunning set of extraordinary chess pieces...but....no surprise coming from you!
