Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

lol. win 0 - fail 2, game over, no rematch, go to sleep rotating pictures is just not your thing we all have defects see you tomorrow!

I received my House of Staunton Leuchars 1849 reproduction set with a 3.5 inch King today along with their fitted coffer chess box in Bird's Eye Maple. The quality of the set and box are outstanding. This is my third HOS set. I also have a travel set and the Collector's Series Luxury Chess Set with a 4.0 inch King that I purchased in either the fall of 1990 or the first couple of months in 1991. That set also is outstanding. I am quite pleased with my purchases from HOS.
Frank C built the foundation of his epic company on top quality, kudos to House of Staunton for leading the way.

That's three pawns already. Is this a message, like the mafia leaving 5 melon seeds on one's doorstep?

haha...no ..not at all..... the mafia connotation is alarming since I am Sicilian!
I posted a set that arrived today....its got a superb knight, one of the best yet, but I was not too happy with the proportions of the set, so I removed those images. But here is the image anyhow
the king is 4.5 Inch with a 1.9 base dia.
The finish to these sets more like a CB set and not the very high spec of OS. We used one of the other HUBS got a lower manufacture bulk run, but you see it never pays....whilst this set would be totally acceptable to many vendors, it is not to us.
That said we will probably sell these ebony sets of at £200 each to sell out, so at those prices one cannot complain

Yes the balls on the pawns are not round. I sold a set like this on ebay a few years ago which was from H O S originally. I think it went to a client in Canada who just wanted the box. I got less than the shipping cost. It rarely pays to sell sub-standard sets at any price.

Agree totally ...so perhaps they go back to sender! ....which is a shame as the knights are good

If you look on my website, chessspy.com you will see a video entitled how to make pawn balls round (or something like that) it is an easy turner's trick using a sharpened tube of a slightly smaller diameter than the finished ball. You may like to pass this tip on to the turners, even though you may well never use them again.

The knight is fantastic, what a shame.
yeah Mike its pretty good isn't it.......it the best one so far. I will keep the knight heads...and get them made by our top guys, and in the right proportions

I am in contact with another reseller of chess sets who is having similar problems. This is what he says.
I am appalled how every set comes with a defect even with the amount of money that we pay.
The problems of using out-workers in third world countries are hard to solve

If resellers truly want to correct this problem, the solution is QC (quality control) -- inspect every set, every piece, and hold the out-workers responsible for their poor craftsmanship. This, of course, adds an additional cost to the end user. So if you're not willing to cough up a few more bucks for a quality chess set, then don't complain about the results (most of the time, you get what you pay for).
If you're buying from one of the low-cost vendors, just assume that most of the sets you receive will probably have one or two issues that need to be corrected, and hope the reseller doesn't get upset and take it out on you instead of the people they're buying the sets from.

I for one am delighted that no one so far has shown an interest in the cheaper jaques repro we offered! Clearly it demonstrates that collectors and the like would much rather have a quality set with accuracy other than a cheap set with imperfections....and pay the higher price for quality- I am so pleased and it really does go to show price is not everything as some would have you believe!
We have 10 sets of the cheaper Jaques in Ebony, yes it has minor flaws as we used the same supplier to a well known mid range vendor, that said chess.com members if you want a bargain then £100/ set with £30.00 shipping! ( the previous shipping offer had expired)
