I see that in the description they describe the set as the favourite of "the greatest chess player of all time, Mr Alan Dewey". How quickly we forget Fischer, Kasparov, Carlsen ...

Makes me worry if all the other statements about the chess set are as off as this one.

Thanks.

CB just posted a teaser on their FB page saying "The wait is almost over" and "Nov. 2", so maybe it really will come out.

Edit: I am honored to be posting in the same thread as the greatest chess player of all time, Mr. Alan Dewey.

I am sure these sets will sell out quickly.! With Alan Dewey advising them on the correct reproduction, I am sure it will look great. I just think the size is way too big for me at least.

I don't think there has ever been so much hype over a chess set as the 1849 Jaques replica from ChessBazaar. And a special thanks to Alan Dewey who helped make the 1849 Jaques set a reality!

Does size really matter? LOL

Expectations are running high.   I am sure 10-15 orders will be placed the first few hours. I do think it will sell out but maybe will take 2-3 days. After all they aren't giving the set away and for some this isn't their favorite looking set.  Some like those knights with crazy manes and double heads. Cool

After everyone here gets their set later this week we can all talk about the 3 1/2" Jacques or the 4" BCC both of which I do not expect to be released till late 2015 or for that matter into 2016, which by that time I may be cinder in the ground or floating on my favorite trout stream, wherever they decide to spread me out.  Surprised

Very fine ad listed on the CB site for these chessmen.  Waiting for the inaugural like everyone else.

But it looks to be a big win for Vik Singh, Alan Dewey and many collectors.  Kudos to them both!  Congratulations.

Really? Apart from the discussion here on this forum between a small group of people, I haven't seen any discussion about it anywhere, much less "hype". Even Chessbazaar hasn't done any real promotion — until the new blurb went up in the last few days, you wouldn't have known from their website that a new version was in the works. The original Jaques set was far more hyped by its makers than this repro.

Well I don't know about that number, this line of forum is about repros of the Jaque's set. Here are listed at least 5 different vendors. The chessbazar repo doesn't even have their own line of forum. And who knows how it will really come, and compare to all the others listed here.

However I feel like 3.75 is a nice size, I don't really like supersize sets so this is a down for me.

23,00 views, maybe, but as htdavidht points out, this thread is not exclusively about the CB set. Only a small number of pople are posting about the set, which does not make the most hype over a chess set ever. Even HoS hype their sets more than this.

CB is mentioned right in the first post about the redesign that is breaking tomorrow. It is also mentioned or inferred in many other of the 322 posts that come after that.

Hi MIke. Definetely a lot of interest in the CB 1849 Jaques set. Thanks for pointing this out!

TundraMike

Well I didn't hesitate and ordered one of the 50 sets they have. Looks like a beauty to me. But you must remember there were many variations of the early sets so no one set is the only proper 1849 set. They kept tweeking the sets and I guessing they kept experimenting with designs.  This set has Alan Dewey's name on it and he know a heck of a lot more on these sets than I ever will so I trust the master.

I predict by tomorrow sometime they will be sold out.

At $350  it may be some time before I can get my hands on the set.  I had spoken to Vik about possibly getting a demo set just to do a write up about it and send it back to him, but no luck.

Chess Bazaar does have sales, so I'll be on the look out.

I'm taking some time tonight to consider the look of this set before updating the original post.

Beautiful set!....wisemike I feel the same way as you, I placed my order for the 1849 set as soon as I received their e-mail.I added the kingside stamping to my set.

TundraMike

Also got the stamping even though I think it should have been standard. Can't see where two stampings would cost $10 each.

TundraMike

@Jack After this initial run I am sure the set will go on sale for 20% off as all their sets are.

The curved body and hard lines of the knight's face rules it out for me. ... I prefer the more upright knight and slightly pointier bishops (like the earliest jaques).

I'm with you. I agree that it looks nice, but the downward slope of the knight's head is unlike any pictures I've ever see of an early Jaques set and the knight doesn't have the characteristic downturned mouth (and I hate the upward facing nostrils). The pawns are a big part of any set for me, and the collars on these ones are just too pronounced, plus the battlements on the rooks are too high for my liking. Even if this set is 100 per cent accurate to a Jaques set, it's not a Jaques design I like. I prefer the Chess Piece's set by a long shot, though I'm not a fan of its pawns either.
