I've just had a quick google - striped ebony veneer is £45 for 243 x 20 cm (x0.6mm). That would make a about one chess board, and apart from the veneer they're plywood or chipboard(?). No idea how difficult they are to construct on a commercial scale though.

The comment was an attempt of refuting the idea of a "high end veneer"

Let me tell you,  some of the high end veneer boards we buy from Italy are extremely expensive ! But the quality of craftsmanship is second to none

Yes I realised the poster felt that "high end veneer" was an oxymoron. Even in the world of furniture, using veneers is not a new thing and there's lots of antique veneered furniture which is highly desirable.

I have always found The Spanish veneer boards from Rechapodos Ferrer to be superior to many solid boards. The craftsmanship on my two boards is flawless.  They are not cheap by no means in quality or in price.  Italy is another country where fine artisans build great chess boards out of veneer. The best board overall I have is a solid wood board made in Italy, I believe it comes from Sorrento.

Here is the link to Rechapodos Ferrer it is for wholesalers but you can see the different types of chess boards and about the company.  Rechapodos Ferrer

Sorry for the off-topic reply, and yes I know better, but I didn't see anyone mention this veneer board maker and I feel they make one of the best.

I've got one of those, the "Tiger Ebony Deluxe", very nice it is too

I still want one of these though: https://www.houseofstaunton.com/signature-contemporary-chessboard-red-amboyna-birds-eye-maple-2-5-squares-20918.html

I vote for the olmo burl maple one, really nice for a veneered board

Aren't many of the high end boards that use exotic woods made from veneers?

Yes they are, and with some of these woods becoming endangered perhaps veneered boards are the responsible choice.

Really?  High end veneer?  I'm thinking in terms of furniture.  Is your high end desk going to be a solid oak top or plywood covered in veneer?

There is really no reason a veneer board should be expensive.  Cheap materials and easy construction.

What a ridiculous statement !! I'm not even going to give you the benefit of any further input, suffice to say your comment is obviously an uneducated guess

Jesus sorry if I hurt your feelings lol!

Here's a video of a craftsman producing a veneer chess board. You can understand why his boards would be expensive. I would love to have one. Sorry, but the video is in German.

Thanks for the video. He probably makes better boards then most make solid boards. That guy is a true craftsman.

Most interesting video.  Definitely fine work requiring a steady hand.

Schachbrett preis war 280 Euros.

Did you notice he was missing a couple fingertips on the left hand?  Woodworkers hazards.

What do you think?

TundraMike

Pretty darn good, who made them?

It's the set I posted few days ago. It's House of Staunton 1857 set.

TundraMike

Nice looking, here are my Knights from the top line Official Staunton set. The background is a solid mahogany chess box made in Italy.  No veneer on this baby. Look at the bases of the Knights, I love it, and the whole set is like that.

TundraMike

Another pic of the same set.

@ TundraMIke:This knight from OS is stunning! Did you get to view the antiqued version of this same 1851 Cooke-Morphy Jaques set before you made your decision on the plain boxwood model you had purchased? I'm on the fence with both. I'd like to make a purchase but seem undecided which would suit me best. I'm leaning towards the antiqued version. Congratulations on your acquisition, it's a great buy! I will speak with Mr. Miceli soon about a deal.

Oh I know this set! It's amazing.
I'm a sucker for that distressed antique look

Thanks for the compliments and I am sure Carl likes the compliments too. His new antique look I feel is stunning.  The older look was nice too but I wanted something I could put my own patina on as I will play with this set, of course in a responsible way (no blitz and no slamming pieces, etc.).  If he had the same set made now with the new antique process I might go for that.  This will be passed down as an heirloom.  I do feel the boxwood used to make Jaques sets in the 19th century was a yellowish boxwood. We have been through this discussion and some feel it is the aging process even though the set was stored almost from new. Some feel it's just patina. English boxwood used back hen I do believe was yellowish. Either way, if you go for the plain boxwood, knowing it is a high-grade boxwood or the antique look I feel you will not be disappointed.

@TundraMike; You're welcome. Say the photo you had posted of the OS knight looks like an ivory/camel bone-like, cream or light beige colored version of the Cooke-Morphy set you purchased instead of a plain boxwood which usually has a very pale yellow hue to it. I messaged Carl about a possible sales proposal and currently awaiting his response to see if a deal could be brokered with a payment plan in the queue. This is an easier method to handle such a payment the bonus is the storage  box that comes with the set. Hopefully, the deal gets done in the next few days.
