Not really, just enough to check if the instruments are okay. Fun fact: Most violin makers don't actually play the violin.
Ah ok, I play a bit of guitar in spare time 😊

I hate to add to this discussion, but just a quick point of fact - as a business entity registered in Ontario, Canada, StauntonCastle is obliged to charge HST when selling/shipping to any resident of Ontario. I just checked their site and they do not charge the appropriate tax...
When selling internationally, local taxes do not apply. Just as any German manufacturer subtracts the German sales tax if a customer is from abroad, i.e. not from the European Union.
I'm a resident of Ontario. Any Ontario company selling me something online is obligated to collect HST. SC is supposedly located in Brampton., ON and required to collect HST when selling to an Ontario resident. And yes, they would not be required to collect tax when selling to you, just as I wouldn't be required to pay Mwst (VAT) when buying from someone in Germany.
yes, he is or was the owner, the website doesn't seem to be operational to some extent, so wondering if he was still in business? he is a really nice guy and has been in the chess business for as long as I can remember.
He seemed like a good guy. It would be a shame if he's out of business. He has a lot of very interesting sets at his site that I've seen nowhere else, including non-Staunton designs like the German Twin Knight and a very nice looking Northern Upright.

Yes !..interesting sets and amazing customer service that was his speciality ...
If anything is clear to me now, is how many experts on international taxes laws are on this debate... LOL.

I have found out that this kind of laws are not as straight forward as you describe here... It will all depends how the paperwork is filed out...
This probably be a clue for it:
"Our chess crafting unit set up in Amritsar, India on the name of MANDEEP HANDICRAFTS established in year 1977. Our Canadian office is for online sale of all our products."
https://stauntoncastle.com/pages/about-us
From that quote, is this office in Canada... a branch or a subsidiary or something else? What difference does it make to the taxes?
This other link I found maybe helps explaining a bit more:
"Branch offices are popular because they enjoy certain tax advantages."
Anyway... without knowing how they fill out their paperwork, it is hart to tell what taxes they should be collecting and all that stuff...

I second this...
While browsing Jon Crumiller's picure album I found these "dirty" knights.
They look a lot like Official Staunton's distressed knights.

@Prince_of_Bohemia Wow! Can you send a link, please?

I second this too. I am following this thread for a long time because of the wealth of information about sets and manufacturing. I am a potential buyer, not interested in a seller’s tax construction.
I’m playing violin too btw.
I'm sure someone has posted this, but this is an excellent resource: http://www.britishchesssets.com/chess/index.html. I love the 1852-55 bishop, 1855-56 bishop, 1853-55 "Paulsen" knight, and 1855-60 "Anderssen" knight. If I could choose a Jaques set to own it would be probably something in the 1855 range that features these particular pieces; I also think the antique Jaques in the original photo in this thread is pretty much perfect.
I have no problem with the "distressed" look (the Morphy set looks only mildly antiqued btw) although it's advertised as "distressed", too). I'm in the violin-making business, and the vast majority of new instruments of higher calibre is antiqued, too (as new violins can look very boring when not antiqued).
do you play the violin, sound?
