I think regardless of the label being white, the set in question is beautiful. I have several Jacques sets and they are truly a work of art. If you are after a piece of history and a high quality chess set then they are worth investing in.
As for £1,500, well you can get similar sets for a cheaper price if you are patient and play the auction game (and have a bit of luck).

An incomplete 1870’s Jaques set just listed on eBay - be interesting to see what this goes for…

Right NOW with MISSING pieces, and some of the existing pieces damaged to spend $75 Dollars on that set is to be ripped off. Yes it *will* be interesting to see what some fool will pay for a damaged chess set w/missing pieces.

That’s nonsense AZbobcat ! It’s absolutely worth it to someone who may need replacements to an existing set ! Or a vendor wanting to reproduce the set

Both Jacques London stamped Kings. Set of 4 matching Knights. And the original box. No mention of the label though. If this was The Price is Right (closest price without going over) I'm going to guess... $293 usd!

I’m going say 775.00 when the dust clears. The box itself 200.00 , Maybe I’ll eat crow😂

I am looking at a Jaques set.

Any idea when the set would date from at all as I haven’t seen one not in a mahogany box and the label design seems quite modern…?

I ended up bidding for and winning this auction. Hammer price was £1,000, so with the commission it will be £1,239.40 in total which I think is a good price.

I will update the thread once received and with my Jaques chess board which is currently being repaired.

congratulations!

Congratulations on becoming a vintage Jaques chessmen steward! I am fairly confident the photostudio strobe flash washed out the label and box making some people question it. The set looks great to me. Great price. And that KEY... thumbup.png

Yes indeed @shaunlawler - how satisfying it must be for you to have purchased a piece of history and to match it with your board too. It’s well out of my price range but I appreciate the value intrinsic to the pieces.

Well played sir and I can imagine you sitting down with a friend, in a quiet room with a single malt in hand - enjoying a game with these pieces. 👍

Hey! Good for you Shaun! Just ask yourself, how many people own a set like that?

All is good and coming from a place that gave us The Beatles(Liverpool though) I'm truly happy for you.-happy.png

Best of luck

Nobody finds that set looking awfully new? Aside from the shine (ok you can clean up any set and make it shiny) there is no noticeable damage or and dust residue in the rooks that is always hard to completely get out. And the label. Box looks aged yes, label really doesn't. Then put an antique book in the picture to enhance an antique vibe. Hmm. Hope I am wrong. Please let an expert look at the set when it arrives.

Hey, if anyone wants to spend £1500-1650 GBP ($2000-2200 usd) for a Jaques set, Tim Millard at Antique Chess Shop is fully stocked. Just got an eMail from them about updated inventory.

Sheesh! That #2044 looks amazing....I'd never have thought I'd want an old/vintage set,but these are really fine objects of desire and in such nice shape. The guy must go to a lot of garage sales to come up with such a fantastic inventory.

Good luck to the fortunate few who get one of these gems.

Hummmm. These sets are far better than what you can buy on Fleabay, PLUS the set you receive has already been repaired so you don't have to send it out to be restored, PLUS you get ALL the pieces PLUS you get an evaluation of what the real price is worth for insurance purposes. If you just have to HAVE one of these Jaques sets, this is probably the way to go.

+1

Maybe I should have held out…!

Some of his non-Staunton sets look really sweet also. This is the stained half of a German bone set.
