Thank you Carl and Carl.

I just heard that Garick Colemen died last week. A sad thing, he battled bone cancer for many years. The antique chess world is the poorer for his loss.

That's very sad news Alan, I was planning on visiting his store next time I was in London.  I hope someone carries on his legacy

Hi Carl,

Yes I liked his shop too. I was in there once or twice almost every Saturday for 25 years and had many interesting convesations with him about sets he had aquired. I do not think Portobello Road is as vibrant as it used to be as interest in antiques has waned amongst the younger generation.

Dear all

Firstly condolences for Mr Coleman, I only got to see his website.

This thread is a bit unweildly however I cant remember seeing direct comparisons of reproductions vs originals, so even though I think this is 1850 not '49 I feel its worth a look

the following is a 3.5 jaques v a 3 HOS collector series.

I find the carving on the originals is much, much more refined compared to the collector series such as the knight which is much more block like. Even though I do like the aggressive nature of the knight on its on when not considered part of the repro scene, however it is described as HOS original repro entry as described in post 1!

champagne. (according to my wife!)

I thought the comparison was interesting. I hope you guys thought so. Unfortunately have no other repro's to compare. Besides, I dont have a 4'4 to compare anything to.... maybe one day :)

thanks fof the pics, very interesting. It is quite clear to me that the carving of the older set is way more accurate, even the design is superior. The only thing which seems a bit improved in the new set is the slit in the mitre of the bishop, more regular in the collector set.

Interesting how the comparison shows up the differences

Eyechess

Well, they are obviously different designed sets.  And as many have noted even the Jaques sets varied in design from each other.

But with that I think the differences in the workmanship can be attributed to the difference in technology available when the sets were produced.  And there will inevitably be differences in the artisans carving the sets.

Can anyone else post direct comparison photos of the repro sets that have been discussed on this thread?

Great photos, jjrehp!
