I wonder when was the last time a Stunton set design was manufactured in the UK ?...a bit of history beng made here?  :)

I am not a fan of club-size sets but will make an exception for a UK-made set cast from an original!  When can we expect this to be offered?

 ----Patrick

well not exactly...its cast from a reproduction 1851 set....well its close!!

Well, it still looks great Wink

Plastic pieces are identical. I appreciate that these pieces are not exactly alike. Look at the opposing knights. They are not exact duplicates of each other.

"yes it is cast from an actual set"

Perhaps this is the way to go in the future.

I am sure weighting could be incorporated. However these modern stonecast type resins are similar in weight to ivory and Jaques never weighted their ivory sets.

I like the idea of this set in resin. I also like the red/white to make it resemble an old ivory set. I assume differently colored resin was used? In other words, the pieces were not painted red or white?

Not sure I like the artificially painted-on dirt and grime.

yes correct, different pigments not paint. NO PAINT used in our set...for me the grime makes the set!

I agree that the price is way too high.! Its a nice looking set though.

FrankHelwig

at that price point, I'm not interested either.

GM4U

dont hang me just yet guys!! obviously the update this morning in the price is an error, there is no justification of that hike, take my word the price is £129.00 ! ..

Carl, I have to admit that I am disappointed by this resin set. It looks wonderful, and I understand from your prior posts that it is made in England, but I cannot pull the trigger on this at your current price point. Being curious, I went to your site yesterday to look, I saw the set listed at 129 pounds, which is 185 USD. When I went to the site today, the price had magically risen to 179 pounds, which is over 250 USD. Counting shipping, this set will be close to 300 USD, which is outlandish for a resin set. Even 185 USD stretches credibility.

Considering that people can buy an excellent quality wood set at the same price point, and attractive Chinese made resin sets for 99 USD with a decent quality board/box, I fear that you will find little market for this set on this side of the pond. Time to outsource to your Chinese contacts!

Hi Rob

it was in error now updated correctly, however I would like to know what price you would say was acceptable? perhaps you are right, we may need to outsource to China, as it is incredibly expensive manufacturing in the UK

£90.00 for the 3,75" version? :) In all fairness, the price listed on the website does seem to include a "sturdy presentation style box" (details?).

First of all I wouldn't even consider the set you are showing on eBay, it looks so cheap looking and is not in the same class of Carl's resin set.  I am sure he is worried about sending it to China and having no quality control over it.

His cost is more than likely over $79 or even $99.

But seriously, looking at the pictures you are comparing that set on eBay with Carl's set?  Yes they are both chess sets.

goodknightmike

Robert, I agree with Wisc Mike, The Chinese set pictured is a poor  comparison. Mixing apples and oranges so to speak. Carl has always treated Chess.com members fairly with his pricing. So I think Carl is offering a fair price on his  unquely beautiful 1851 resin reproduction set.  Granted, shipping to the US from the UK is quite expensive, but it is what is is.

I think I would be a lot happier with OS' set than with the pictured one as well. But I could see that some people might also just think that a plastic or resin set will only ever be plastic or resin, and that it will never live up to an equivalent wooden set. I personally think there are upsides and downsides to both, with wood probably providing the more luxurious 'feel' and plastic or resin possibly not breaking, chipping or cracking as easily. Now that I look at the pictures of the OS set again, and the detail that it shows, I think the listed price could be quite fair.

TundraMike

Carl's resin set looks like a real antique marvelously done.  The Chineese set from eBay is fine for a chess set but not what I would add to my collection. I am sure when I display the 1851 resin set I will get nothing but compliments.

Bronco

Perhaps this set is a better price point comparison to Carl's .http://www.houseofstaunton.com/chess-pieces/themed-chess-pieces/classic-staunton-chess-set.html

Though Carl's is very nice looking.
