I rather like the look of it, and I think it might be possible given recent developments to have resin replacements made for the missing pawns and ball tops.  Or perhaps make a casting of the entire set?  What do you think about it, Carl?

im on it!! :) BUT honestly our 1851 resin set is much better IMO :)

Carl, With all due respect this seems to be a very early set as it has the carved JAQUES LONDON stamp.

I have not checked with Prof Sir Alan Fersht's book as to when the straight stamp was made but this will be a first year of production set I should think, and that in itself makes it very desirable. Given recent developments in casting repros I should think there are a few of the other drop shop boys looking hard at it.

I know Alan, im jesting here....i do like the 1851 design over this jaques, but i know the value and historic differnce !! :)

Carl,

I agree, there are better looking early Jaques sets than these very early pieces. I personally like the wood knight's heads on the wooden Leuchars set but I do know it is not to everyones taste (Prof. Sir Alan Fersht even went so far as to describe them as the "ugliest knights I have ever seen".)

You pays yer money and you takes yer choice as we Yorkshiremen say.

£1400 !

Interesting.  I'll have to keep this sale in mind each time I see ivory chess sets and outrageous claims on values.  If a real, honest to goodness Jaques ivory set fetches less than $2000 there's little chance for random sets, well carved they may be, to be worth anything near the $10k I see mentioned occasionally.

jjrehp

Why was the red colour so off to everything else I have seen? (Never in flesh though!)

chessspy1

That set would have brought $20k a few years ago

loubalch

Is it even legal to sell an ivory set these days?

chessspy1

Yes but it cannot be imported here.

There is a lot of legislation going through ATM which seeks to ban even antique ivory such as this set. We must hope that common sense prevails and that the gun and music people have enough clout to blunt any ruinous law.

Stopping trade in elephant ivory will not save elephants, quite the reverse in fact. If the animals become worthless (meat leather ivory) they will be killed as they do a lot of damage to farmers crops in the reserve areas.

Here we go, cb recently posted a mysterious graphic on their website. I think they are coming up with a new chess set tomorrow :)

Not sure how that relates to Jaques reproductions...

Anyway, looks too ornate for my tastes.

Hello Jack

History aside, its an interesting design. I do like the knight, your observations are right! Knight looks bit ornate, seems like knight is inspired from StegosaurusSurprised. I'm sure it will be a classic designer set!

I will hold my opinion untill I have seen the set, but in general terms I like a simple knight's head in the Selene style for playing chess. The pieces should simply become an aide memoire for those of us lesser beings who cannot play blindfold.

Alan, I often play as if I'm blindfolded regardless of the style of the knight.

Hi Chuck,

I hear that. :)

Interesting  Knight design for the hand. I have looked at photos of this set online it does look good over all.

I notice that most of these repro sets are advertised as not being UV resistant. I assume this means that you can't have them on prolonged display because the pieces, especially the dark ones, will fade. What is the experience of previous purchasers/advice of manufacturers?

Hi Guys...We took the CB design 1849 and made some size adjustments....
