Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

Sort:
chessspy1

I have a Jaques stamped bone Staunton set here. It is AFAIK the only stamped Jaques Staunton set known to date. The pieces are very pleasing, slender and of course being bone, very tactile.

I will post pictures as I get time.

Please do. Very interesting. Are you restoring this set for someone, or are you preparing it for auction?

Set looks really nice, Carl. I couldn't resist - just bought one, even though I need another set like a fish needs a bicycle...

I ordered mine as well. If I end up winning a copy in the competition perhaps I can change my entry? happy.png I just thought the 30% off was too good a deal to pass up on.

Tread lightly there.

Many of us rather detest manufacturers logos on goods, especially those of middlemen.

If it does not say 'Jaques London' it does not belong on the king.  'Saggu India' is at least honest.

Kingside stamping is another matter of debate.  On an actual antique set, OK.  On a repro maybe not so much.  It's a solution to a problem that does not now and never really did exist.  If you are playing over an old game and there's enough ambiguity that you need to trace back which is the 'king's knight' it might be that you'll get more out of the game than otherwise.  Today of course such markings are just a distraction like an insect on the piece.

"Of course"? It's hardly as self-evident as that. I respect your opinion that you don't like the markings, but that's just your opinion. I feel differently, and I suspect others do as well, particularly if it's a reproduction of a set that originally bore such markings. As to Mike V's suggestion, I like the idea of "Official Staunton" stamped on the base of the king. I think it's good homage to Jaques, and is every bit as "honest" as the" Saggu" stamping. I would say Saggu erred in stamping both kings' and queens' knights and rooks with crowns.

While the kingside stamping hails from the time of descriptive notation, the fact that it was done makes it an integral component of the historical authenticity and aesthetic of the reproduced pieces. It has nothing to do the utility of the markings vis-a-vis algebraic notation. If you don't like the stampings, buy pieces without them. Please don't begrudge, belittle, or sarcastically dismiss those of us who see the stampings as part of the history and aesthetic of authentically reproduced classics.
