Review--2017 Sinquefield Cup by Chessbazaar

After waiting a little over 3 weeks on the backorder, I recently received Chessbazaar’s version of the 2017 Sinquefield Cup set in Ebony and Boxwood with a 3 3/4” king.

After waiting a couple of days to open the package, due to my anticipatory anxiety about potentially having to deal with some type of defect, I’m pleased to report no cracks or imperfections that I can see. happy.png

The pieces have a decent heft to them.  In addition, the knight has a similar profile to the Dubrovnik knight, and it actually feels like a Dubrovnik knight in my hand, save for the spiky knight’s mane.

My only “complaint,” which is really no complaint at all, is that the pieces, while attractive, aren’t as majestic as the much more expensive HOS pieces, likely in part due to the size differences between the sets.

For $170 after discounts, I give this set a thumbs up!

Beautiful set. Especially the knights. I have the 2014 version of the Sinquefield cup set which I really enjoy playing with, but I would like to have knights like yours.

I wonder if Chessbazaar sells pieces seperately. I sent them an email a few weeks ago, but they didn't answer.

That is a beautiful set. Can't find one thing I don't like about it.

The squares are 2.25"

Nice looking set. Here is an option if you are poor and can't get the real McCoy.

It isn't exact copy but at least you are somewhat close to it.

LOL - another great set.

You really have an eye for a good looking board

Thanks.  This is a Teak and Maple board that I purchased in the early 2000s from the USCF along with an ebony set, although I didn't realize until much later that the ebony set was a better match to a 2" square board.

I prefer the genuine version which was sold by House of Staunton. Chessbazaar copy lacks the charm of the original set.

For $170 shipped you have done very well. There is nothing in that style that you can compare with it that does not cost 100's of dollars more. I do agree the HOS is a very gorgeous set, no arguments here since they made the original sets. It's just hard to compare sets when the price is so far apart. Great job by both CB and HOS.

After noting a comment by @MHC818 on another thread - I thought I would bump this review by @DrChesspain - thanks for the review - I had not seen it before. It’s a lovely set. 👍
