review dunoon set

After reviewing the leningrad set I have decided to post reviews of a couple of other sets I own. The Dunoon is a set I bought from the Regency Chess Company.

Quality of the set: the pieces are heavy and big, very good quality of the wood for the white army showing some striping, the black army (ebony) is deep black. All pieces are very stable, and they have a very high level of polishing. No dents or scratches.

The carving is very accurate, everything is well done from the spikes on the queen’s crown to the ball of the pawns, which is perfectly round. The knights have an intricate and very detailed carving: the ball of the eye is kind of spherical for instance and not simply round as in most sets, small details that set apart luxury sets from the cheaper ones, I guess.

Design: I think that the set is supposed to be a reproduction of an Andersson style Jaques set, at least from what I can see on http://www.chessantiques.com/antiquejaques.html

To my eye many details of the set are very similar to the original (the large collars on the king and queen, head of the king, high base on the rooks, pawns with big round balls and so on, you can judge by yourselves), but more important for me is the fact that the design is very distinctive: every piece has a characteristic  line and shows personality. I particularly like the rooks, they look and feel massive, quite appropriate to the value of the piece in play.

Customer service: the best in my experience so far, they reply very quickly to mails, address questions in a polite way, and solve problems fast. Just to make clear how good the company is in this regard, after receiving the set I email them because a white bishop had a little brown spot in the wood, nothing major, a couple of days after I had a new bishop in my mail box, free of charge.

In conclusion this is one of my favourite sets and it is a pleasure to play with it.

That's a very nice set! And the pictures are much better than the ones on the Regency site:

Thanks for the review!

PS: What size is the board in your picture?
