Russian chess pieces !?

Sort:
ESP-918

Pictures can be deceiving, so I was wondering does any of you actually own this set?

How does it look in real life?  How does it feel, weights, etc....

Good for blitz ? (And not just) Durable?

It's no good. Those little bulbs on the queen and bishop will disarticulate under certain conditions.

I know original pieces , which made out of plastic those little bulbs will definitely brake easily, but this one's made out of wood!

Still same story tho?

The early originals were made out of all wood also. Here's some pics of an original Grandmaster Supreme set they were trying to copy ...

Most of the Grandmaster sets from the 1980s  have finials made from plastic, and also knights with a wooden base only, and a plastic body, at least for black. They were produced in large quantities. The older, pricier ones have wooden finials. They turn up on Etsy and eBay all the time. Got one such set myself. I got the very similar Tal set from RCM, and it's excellent value and also has opposingly colored wooden finials, a "trademark" of Soviet sets. Saying that it's "no good" is total and utter rubbish.

You watch your mouth, you understand me?

@ESP-918, it's a great chess set, I'd definitely consider getting it. However, one major criterion I consider before buying anything is durability. What are the various situations that will break my treasure? That bulb, or finial, looks suspicious. That's all I'm saying.

I have nearly the same set. I'm convinced that it is the Chess Bazaar  Soviet Championship set. I bought it second hand and I love it. The finials are solid. No more vulnerable than the cross  atop any king in any set.

@Hedgehog1963, it's probably just an optical illusion, but that bulb on the queen literally looks like its about to fall off.

@sound67, you take pride in your chess sets, and you enjoy this category of discussion. If we cannot excuse a moment of passion, then are we still chess players?

@ESP-918, I'm sure the chess set is of superb craftsmanship. A little physics says those those bulbs will hold just fine. Reminds me of all those spectacular buildings they have slanting in every direction with modern engineering - they're absolutely fine.

At last, everyone, happy collecting & happy gaming!

played with my father with this set. i think many soviet olds had same chess in the dark corner.... also this must be checked
