Silicone Chessboards

An excellent review and analysis. Just to confirm, these are the boards that feel like ublick? I've seen them at the Rochester Chess Center store, but I haven't given them a try. I might have to now.

Yes, sorta like ublick !! LOL
But they lie so flat it is wonderful. Now I hate all my vinyl boards. They make me so angry. bwahaha.

I swear I saw this in another thread
Yuss, you caught me Mr. Star. This is the third retread on this article. I believe in recycling. LOL

I too have one of these and I really like it. I am now giving it the ultimate crease test. Last night I folded it up and crammed it into my bag of chess pieces. I plan to leave it there for a week to see if it still lies flat with no creasing. If it does I will be a customer for life!

Yes, let us know what happens. Cuz that is like the archetypal scenario for a tournament chessboard.
Daring people. I would never buy something and spill things on it and then fold it in half just to see if it would resist. Glad others do it for me :).

I will. I hope it works because being so careful with vinyl boards is so tedious. It will be nice to be able to just stuff the whole thing in my backpack with out worrying.

I couldn't agree more.

Can someone provide a link to one of these silicone boards? I don't think I've ever seen one.
I have a few mousepad style boards and one vinyl board. I'm always on the lookout for the ultimate soft portable board. My very first mousepad board, which is an "Official USCF" board from the 1990s, has what may be a permenant quadrant crease from having been folded in half twice and left that way in a box for over a decade. Don't believe the hype that says these neoprene boards never crease.

Hi all,
Just a follow up to my silicone chess board test. I folded it into about a 5" square and stuffed it into my drawstring chess bag along with my pieces. Yesterday (about a week later) I pulled it out and there were only a few minor creases which quickly went away after I laid it flat on the table. This is now, officially, my new travel/tournament board. The only real drawback, as mentioned before, is the inability to slide pieces. However this doesn't bother me at all. I think the ability to fold it more than makes up for that.

Thanks, lasertswift !
If it ended up as a 5-inch square I'm guessing that you folded it back on itself four times. That is definitely the way I would transport this board.
Yes, silicone is the tournament chessboard of the future...and it is here today. LOL
