Slowly building my own "Chess Cave"

Just a parting thought here. I'm slowly putting together the elememtns of my own "Chess Cave" so to speak. Not even a quarter of the way there yet, but I'm planning to furnish the room with furniture, dust filtering, and humidity control devices along with proper shelving for display but when finished I'll be long gone from here to share. Some elements I'm gathering and sets I'll probably put on display for your viewing. I'll also have 2 chess tables in the room with appropriate comfortable seating. A dream that is finally shaping into a realization for me...we all need a little lift now and then to tolerate this horrendous year we've been having.

Very cool, would love to see how it turns out. If you're interested in some dust filter/humidifier/dehumidifier/hygrometer/etc. info, I'd be happy share my research/experience with certain products etc.

Please, by all means, MGT88. You could definitely send me some links to those machines.

I will need to protect my investments and thank you for the kindness of your gesture.

Here are a few of my posts on the subject:

I'll DM you a few other things.

Here's a set that I'm eyeing and would like to add to my inventory, it goes by several names from different vendors. I'd like to obtain in it in a Bud Rosewood/Paduak version not ebony, have plenty of those types already.

My kind of man cave!

Those knights are glorious, a work of art

@QtoQlevel3 Very cool! Good luck with your project. This might sound like a weird question given the center pieces will be your gorgeous chess sets, but what are you planning to put on the walls? Are you going to put up photos of old grandmasters?

chessroboto

I’d recommend a demonstration chess board. Perfect for chess study especially for those positions that require deep analysis where you can use the chess table in the middle of the room to do all the possible variations.
You can utilize the whole wall with a projector to use with the computer that is running a chess video lesson, chess database or chess engine.
If the chess library is vast enough, there won’t be any walls left that wouldn’t be covered by bookshelves.

QtoQlevel3

Not sure yet, but I will have a nighttime skyline photo of lower Manhattan looking from the Brooklyn side across the Brooklyn Bridge in a large panoramic print.

The grandmaster's photo sounds good too. Maybe get a specialty poster shop to blow this one up to panoramic size to partially cover a wall in the "Cave". Most of the great ones are in this one...

@ chessroboto: My apartment is small perhaps in my next residence and even that one won't be as large to utilize a projector or even bookshelves.

No,  mine will be a simplified version with a few shelves for sets and some books to have on display. The more advanced equipment will have to wait until the budget can handle such expenditures and I can obtain enough room in my residence for such an expansion to be considered.

@QtoQlevel3 The NY is nice! The other one is even better. I have to say that I don't know what any of the GMs look like, but I'll take your word that all of them are great players.

Lizard003

cool I am making a semi-chess cave I don't have enough money to get that serious.

You should have the penultimate chess cave, from all of the great stuff you've accumulated over the years.

As you know,I am sure,my wife gifted me our second/unused bedroom for my own chess cave.....Came out great and the Accurite Hygrometer, recommended by "MCH" is an accurate and inexpensive choice....A "must"! Walmart carries it.

The in room portable humidifier "thing" can easily lead one down a rabbit hole, because there are so many choices out there.,,,,MCH's choice is one excellent alternative, but for less money you should look at what Vornado has to offer.

It totally comes down to your room size.If it's relatively large,an Essick Air Unit is superb(not cheap) and make sure you don't get anything that puts out a white dust residue.....I have about 30 years of experience on this subject, because I used to collect acoustic guitars, before my chess addiction,so you can message me any time.....I'm happy to help.

All in all,MCH's previous threads are a "must read" for anyone wishing to house a nice chess collection...Even if stored in their coffers.....NYC humidity is not fun for wood, during the cold season.

Good luck

Thanks, MT, I'll be in touch despite my exodus which will commence towards the end of the month.

I'll hit you up as well on some links to some of those needed machines to keep the collection in pristine condition. Not sure when but hopeful in the near future that my new residence will have a dedicated room for my "Cave" to become a realization.

Forgot to mention a small fan, like the Vornado 6 inch model(very inexpensive and runs continuously forever, using almost no electricity) is good to keep in the room(running almost all the time). This keeps humidity pretty much equal in all areas.I keep mine pointed upwards,at about a 65 degree angle to circulate air in my "chess cave"(love that term you came up with).

As for your exodus....you made that clear to me a long time ago.
