I like all three!
OS Antique Boxwood/Ebonized Jaques reproduction on Jaques Walnut/Maple/Mahogany Frame board. You can see why Jaques did it this way. Both white and black pieces contrast nicely with both light and dark squares and the frame.
cgrau - Many nice pics there of the different board colors. I appreciate the variety. Now to decide.
My vote is for contrast.
I like off-white and green boards with black and white pieces.
With boxwood and ebony... just about anything not black and white is good.
Excellent job on that board.
Chuck, just wow! great photos of some nice set/board combos. I agree with many others that the contrast is important. I think it's why I keep going back to the green and buff leather board. It's very easy on the eyes.
Thanks, Robert. Now, about that board...
Same Lardy set on Mahogany/Maple tournament board. I'm not big on the notation. If you can't visualize an a1-h8 grid, there's not much hope for you as a chessplayer.
Black Lacquered Lardy again on Polish Maple/Mahogany tournament board. I like this style better with the maple frame. More contrast.
You guys are making me jealous. But now that I've moved from a tiny apartment into a large house, I can finally put together a nice playing table for myself. Where is the best combination of quality and price to be found? House of Staunton?

I guess one bedroom will be labeled the "Chess Room".
Quality is a subjective subject.
Typically more $$$ will equal higher quality. That is arguable in some instances.
The measure of quality all depends on what you are looking for.

Turbo, I love my chess table, but I would be very wary of buying one. Most of them come with a built in board. That means one size squares, and one color/wood combination. That limits what kinds of sets you can use with it, unless you put another board on top of it. Which kind of defeats the purpose. I was luck in that my wife had this table for thirty years before I rescued it from the basement. I wanted to sand off the old, 1.5" squares and spray on 2.5" squares for use with my 4"+ sets. In the process I discovered that the top with the board popped out, and was reversible. I cut and stained an insert that rests on the braces, and I can insert nearly all my boards into the table now. I can enjoy all my sets and boards now in a way I couldn't had I bought a table. Apologies to everyone who has seen these pictures posted before.
Great story, Late! Actually the photo in post #20 is what my NOJ Dubrovnik would look like on that green board, as its red is very close to that of the Spanish set depicted there.
Thanks cgrau.
I enjoyed the pics and there is much food for thought there. My favourite was the traditional jaques repro with the jaques board. Even the clock matched the setting! A very nice collection you have there!

Thanks, QK. I very much like that combination, and I was delighted to be able to add two reproductions as fine as I acquired from Official Staunton. Very well done historically and technically at a very reasonable price.
I'm a walnut/maple guy myself.
I really like walnut and maple for black and natural wood sets.
Cgrau - I know what you mean about matchy matchy with the Dubrovnik and Drueke yet the combination seems to still have that 'something else' factor. For some reason though I feel the drueke board is somewhat surpassed when the Dubrovnik is set on the green and white vinyl board! Probably because of all the Fischer pics...
CB Liberty Boxwood/Ebonized set on Rechapados Ferrer Redwood board. A bit too much color with that tablecloth.
