Hey all, I don't own my own chess set at the moment.  I'm looking to buy one made of either wood or marble.

I'm not sure what board dimension I'm wanting but I want a 4 inch king with the other pieces in proportion, so would be great if the board could match that.  If anyone could give me links to sets I could purchase online that would be great.

I'm not looking for anything highly expensive, just something affordable but still looks nice (not plastic, not a folding board).

I would like to buy the whole thing as a set rather than buy different things seperately.

Just thought I would throw in here that my stepdad has an ivory chess set his parents brought back from asia many years ago.  Absolutely beautiful.  A truly amazing set :)

Ok, I'll recommend myself. This is my design:

They are the best chessmen ever, it says so right on the box.

What's your price range? A couple of great sets come to mind without spending a large amount.

baddogno

This guy is reliable and inexpensive:

baddogno

House of Staunton is usually reliable and expensive.  The Ebay stuff  offers better, and sometimes spectacularly better, value.  Some nice board and chess sets starting at $350.   Or google their web site to check out their specials...

EDIT:  I just followed my own link and they actually start at $150. Embarassed

go with wood, affordable, and baddogno or bananaboatcaptain. chessbazaar and chessusa seem to be always good and reliable. chessstore and HOs get mixed reviews and as baddogno says both of those places offer better deals on ebay than on their own sites.

do not go with marble. Unless after playing with wood you're sure yo prefer marble.

When I first started playing chess a year and half ago it was at a friend's house who had a mexican marble set that had never been played on, it was for show. The more we played the smaller the pieces got. We'd drop a pawn and it would break in half. We'd drop a knight and its face would be gone. After about eight games the set was in such bad shape I went out and bought a beautiful plastic set with a vinyl roll up board, and I told the friend to throw out the marble set. Recently I bought a wood set.

Also  check out chess cafe http://shop.chesscafe.com/Wood-Sets_c88.htm they've been having an amazing sale and many people on chess.com have got incredible deals from them in the past two weeks.

I just received a couple of sets from Chess Cafe to be given as Christmas gifts.

Their International series is an incredible value right now I got 2 in rosewood for about $14 each and they are not display quality but nice solid player sets. The rosewood is a dark brown with black grain pattern. I also got a large set with 4.125" king hoping it would be nice enough for display but it is not so I am sending it back, if you want a big player set it might fit your needs and was under $50.

Is the OP wanting a Staunton style set or a Theme set is the question?

bananaboatcaptain

This is what I use at home, a club size set of boxwood and rosewood:

With a solid walnut board which looks much like:

And a nice cherry box:

About US$730 total.  This number is close to the US$770 price of a basic DGT e-board and e-piece set, so that option should be considered as well.

I have the Dubrovnik Plastic Pieces. Its a very nice set of pieces. I wish they could improve the plastic bottoms on the pieces though. Also, some other weight besides wax.

hey Everyone!!!

I have bought an awesome chess set from chessbazaar,, Arrived last month and I'm very satisfied with the built quality, its price and quick delivery. You may check here:

http://www.chessbazaar.com/staunton-triple-weight-club-chess-set-4q-bud-rose-wood.html

Rest there are many options available online/offline. You may get confused the more research you do. Anyways, my best wishes :)

Good Luck !!

Beautiful knight in that set.

How do the pieces feel? I like a very heavy set.

baddogno

That's a great choice Sandy.  I've drooled over those knights for months now but can't really justify another expensive set.  Bud/blood rosewood is a magnificent choice as well.  Congratulations!

Bur_Oak

I have that set in boxwood/ebony. It's exquisite, though I did have to obtain replacements for a couple of damaged pieces. Vik is easy to deal with, and I do recommend chessbazaar.

Ubik42

So where can a white pawn go from e4?

e9? and assuming he is on e9, then what? does he have an option? (e10, or the other white square, I cant make out what it is)
