Spanish Chess Sets 7

Well I promisse one more Spanish Chess Set 8...and no more!

No matter the proportions: one is a Staunton 5, The other 6, what matters is to check the differences and they are accentuated between the two chess sets.

The currently "Indajesa" and my  the Set of 40-50 years. This is what I consider original and the chess pieces of Interzonal of Las Palmas 1970 only the Queen have a difference in the"coronet".

The differences are primarily in the overall elegance of the pieces, more "thin",aesthetic, than the fat ones of the modern pieces, more finesse in carved work are evident in the older set. Only the Rooks seem similar. The differences in the King, Queen, Bishop, Pawn and above all in Khight are abysmal. While in one set a Knight is a Knight, other is a "transgenic" Knight-camel. The Bishop has is religious miter, another a ball on its top. The “body” of the pieces that connect the base to the top of the pieces is thin, almost tree branch,  in modern chess pieces seems a trunk.

And… it´s Enough? Okay!
Maybe copying the old set would lead to more thorough job in carving the wood, maybe the idea was "plumb" the pieces in modern set? I do not know.

I know  that in this this Forum I screamed that I wanted  an old Spanish set as that I saw  In pictures of Alekhine playing in Spain, pictures of 40-50 years, in Las Palmas 1970 Interzonal and ... Someone heard me! A set of these even with some dents for 50 Euros and gold is discovered.

Look at the pictures:

Love the set, Arlindo. Congrats on finding it. Thanks for the great pics.

Yes Arlindo, it is a very nice set indeed. I like all the other Spanish Chess Sets as well as they have a certain charm to them.

Kick, I started collecting sets from different countries because they embody and evoke something of their national spirit, culture, and soul. The pieces connect me to that,  and to the people who conceived, crafted, and played with them.

Nicely stated Chuck.! I feel the same.

I agree with your comments cgrau.

I just got this set. The king is about 95mm. Sorry for the bad photographs.

Love your pictures and your set, Info. Is it a vintage set? Who made it? When? What can you tell us about it?

I don't have much information about the set. It has some differences from the new Spanish sets.

The most notorious difference is the knight; the king, queen, pawn and bishop are thinner, have wider "rings"...

I´ll try to take better pictures this weekend, puting the old pieces along with the new ones, after the arrangements for Día de los Muertos are finished, right now the environment in the house is kind of chaotic, but very nice.

Hopefully Arlindo can tell us more about it.
