1.Winning Chess Tactics - Seirawan 2. The Mammoth Book of Chess - Burgess 3. Silman's Complete Endgame Course -Silman
The endgame book I mention is handy, as the author gives you what you need to know for the level you are at. Then, you shelf the book, and come back when your rating is higher, and do the next set of lessons. Endgame prep is important, it can really show you how pieces work together in a less cluttered environment. The Burgess book covers everything, and has some games included to play through as well. The tactics book, well, tactics is what everyone is going to tell you to drill in from the get-go.
Silman's Complete Endgame Course, Logical Chess Move by Move, Chess Fundamentals by Capablanca, Lasker's chess book (if you can find it in Algebraic), and a first positional play book since your opponents will make lots of those mistakes too.
Game Collection: Logical Chess: Move by Move by Chernev. Once you are done with that, you can try Capablanca: Move by Move by Lakdawala.
Openings: Don't need a book. Just learn the first five moves of the mainline of one opening as White (I recommend Ruy Lopez, Italian Game, or QGD), and two openings as Black, 1 vs e4 (I recommend ...e5) and 1 vs d4 (I recommend ...d5 heading for QGD, though the Slav is also OK and not too complicated)
Tactics: Back to Basics: Tactics by Heisman
Strategy: Winning Chess Strategies by Seirawan
Endgame: Silman's endgame course, Class E endgames
I suggest one book: "Learn Chess--A Complete Course" by Alexander & Beach. I believe you can buy good used copies at Amazon.com for about $5.00. It is the only book you'll need until you approach 1700.
World's Most Instructive Amateur Game Book by Dan Heisman
You'll get games, you'll get advices at the level of your rating.
It's a great book, and you can download all the games in pgn format here:
