Very nice. Thanks for sharing. I also was wondering the weight of the pieces, you can tell, they are indeed stout. I have seen these before IIRC. It wasn't quite what I was looking for at the time however, still well made, and they did catch my attention. Thanks again for the info.

Many thanks, and you're very welcome. They're quite heavily weighted...

Wow, thanks Chuck. Thats pretty heavy, especially for their size. Also thanks for the other pics. The queens are beauties.

I am Brazilian, I have this set for 13 years and it still amazes me everytime I play with it. I can stil; smell the wood everytime I take them out of the bix for playing. I agree completely with the reviews. Its simplicity and absolutely well crafted forms makes it one of the best available sets in the market at a very reasonable price. The pieces are made of ‘pau marfim’, which is similar to maple (Balfourodendron riedelianum). The black pieces are made of imbuia (brazilian walnut).

I managed to score one of these sets for my birthday!  Absolutely gorgeous.  It's one of the older sets dating to the 90's.  After playing over a few games last night, it handles as well as it looks.  The pieces are so heavy and well balanced that they feel magnetized when they hit the board.  I'm without a wood board right now but it fits nicely on a standard vinyl board.    nullnullnull

Looks pretty good on the green & buff vinyl board too, BeyondDuplication. wink.png

Hi everyone, is this a vintage or antique Brazilian set? Your comments would be most
gratefully received as I've yet to find a conclusive origin or period for it. To see further photos go to 'Unusual Staunton-type chess set' on the Chess Equipment strand.

Newly arrived from Brazil is this gorgeous Amazonia-Premiere set in walnut. The king is four inches tall, and the pieces are heavily weighted. It arrived in a wood carying case with felted racks for the pieces. A more detailed review will follow. Many thanks to Dirk Dagobert van Riemsdijk.

I got my Amazonia set from Dirk Dagobert circa 2005. The design of some pieces has changed a little since then and that's certainly on purpose. I prefer some of them the old way, others look better with the new design, and that's ok. What really annoys me is how weird the wood of the black pieces made of imbuia/Brazilian walnut looks now (and I'm not judging just by cgrau's photos, I've seen them in person). You almost don't see the grain of the wood, it's as if they were painted in dark brown (I know they aren't, just saying it looks like as if they were). I wonder if it's related to the quality of the wood Mr. Dagobert has been able to reach, or if it has to do with a change in the finishing method (wax, polishing etc).

It doesn't look like this set is brazilian. Nothing like anything I've ever seen around here.

Does anyone have this set for sale or no off a place that still sells this set?

Iam absolutely in love with the set but unfortunately Dirk does not produce or sell it anymore.
