Here is the small painted magnetic set next to the ultimate chess set pieces.
Here is an overview, you can see how much space it takes up. IT'S LIKE I'M REALLY THERE! LOL!
Very nice sets, MC!

mcostan, where did you get your book stand? I've been meaning to get myself one to avoid the neck cramps after long hours of reading.
Peter Ganine Conqueror chess set
I owned this set as a kid, and still think its the most beautifal I have seen; would love to have it recast in ceramics one day. BB.

I got mine from amazon, it is called "the best bookstand". I'll post a link when I get to a real computer. Its very adjustable.
eta: here is the link, it comes in differant sizes.

I took up chess in the early 70's and played on a Windsor Castle at my local chess club. Years later, I decided to try to find one. It wasn't easy but I was lucky enough to get my hands on four of them. Two are black and maple, one is red and maple, and one is black and white. All are weighted and in pristine condition, with the exception of the black and white, which shows some wear on the bottom edges of some of the pieces. Has anyone else out there been lucky enough to find one in pristine condition? I don't think it's easy but I'm curious. Thanks!
Just stumbled onto this old thread. I was given a weighted red and white Windsor Castle set in 1959. I still use it. Something about the red dye seems to have weakened the dark pieces. Nearly all of them except the knights have broken and I've glued them back together, but the white pieces, with the exception of some tiny chips around the base, are still in great shape. I still prefer this set to any other. I don't take it to tournaments but use it for analysis and discussion at home.
A great set. I played with it many times at the Western and North Central Opens and other events held in Milwaukee. I'd love to play with one again. What happened to them all?
I beg to differ. Ugly, poorly weighted, badly balanced, and very prone to chipping and breakage. Popular because there was no inexpensive alternative at the time. Sent to death row by the Drueke Players' Choice set and then executed shortly thereafter by the plastic USCF sets. The dead ones were buried in landfills or cremated in incinerators because they were all chipped and broken.
yeah, I've got to agree. Maybe there's some sentimental value there, but that is one unattractive chess set.
I kick myself for not acquiring one that became available some time ago. Many thanks to House of Staunton and Frank Camaratta, though, for resurrecting this set with their wood reproductions.
Hi Chuck,
I'm thinking of getting the Windsor Castle reproduction from HoS but the height of the knight is making it difficult to pull the trigger. Currently the white and black is out of stock and will be available again in the winter. I want to call and ask if they can make the knight a little bit taller before production but I'm not sure they will do that. Do you think it's worth getting?
How many other sets make the cover of Sports Illustrated?
Alright Chuck, you win lol I'll get the HOS Reproduction once they're available in the winter.
I can't wait!
Thank you
Anyone that had a 3D printer and the right dimensions could make some serious $$ with those pics of Bobby using that Windsor Castle set. Licensed of course . I have tried for years to find a Windsor Castle in good condition to no avail.
I think this is the best plastic set ever made, in terms of overall quality, craftsmanship and aesthetics....the Cavalier #1491 by Pacific Game Co....obviously the knight is the signature piece.....I still have this set, which I purchased in 1989...

Set came in several different boxes depending on year of purchase....I believe the blue cardboard box is for the original sets of the 1960's & '70's...The brown sliding top bakelite box which came with my No.1491 set in 1989...
I remember playing with this chess set at the Manhattan CC (1970 ish) when it was located at the Henry Hudson Hotel in NYC. The set seems to have disappeared from sight. Would love to play a tournament game again with this classic set. From these posts it appears to have a heyday during the 60's.
A #1492 Cavalier is up on eBay if anyone's interested: https://www.ebay.com/itm/164857710457?hash=item2662490779:g:L~MAAOSwNX9gmFRA
I guess if the Windsor is a 9.8 for my tastes,I would give the "ultimate" a 7.5
