The Lardy of All Lardys

I've been looking to round out my Lardy collection with a club-sized Lardy--a set with a 4.5 inch king. They seem to be pretty rare. Lucky for me, this one literally fell into my lap.

It's a massive set. It's shown here on a 2.5" Jaques board, which it dwarfs. I think I'll make a 2.75" board just for it.

This set is in terrific condition. No cracks. Very little chipping. No noticeable leaning, so common in Lardys.

The knights are gargantuan, and nicely carved down to the horses' teeth.

Lardy pieces being boxed in the Jura...

I quite like the shape of the bishops' mitres...

If I have any complaint at all, it's that the knights are disproportionately large.

Wow, what a nice set that is!

I agree about the Bishop's mitres.

That set is a beauty. I have a 3" Lardy set that I love, and it is very lightly weighted (which I don't mind at all, because it is a great set to play with, even though I tend to like heavier sets). Is your big set weighted much? I am wondering if maybe the Lardy company just didn't weight their sets much, generally.

Thanks, Jon. They are weighted, but not heavily.

Hey cgrau, congratulations on the gift from heaven. If we all could be so lucky! The set is absolutely gorgeous. Quite striking. I agree about that knight; he seems to be getting a little out of hand. Tongue Out Wow, and it's on a 2.5 inch board? Just awesome. I don't mind, though, it being in close quarters the way it is. Congrats again.

And yes, it does seem to be the Lardy of all Lardys!

By the way, did the provider offer any indication of when that set was produced? It's in great condition.

Up, from the info from the Chess Museum, I'd say that these are from the fifties or sixties.
