Up, they are near-pristine condition. I am ecstatic.
The Lardy of All Lardys

the borders seem less (thick) for the larger squares (2.75?) board....😱
Great observation. Yes. to board is 24" x 24". With the normal border it would be 26" or more square, too large and too heavy. Compare it to these Druekes with 2.25" squares.

Playing chess a few years ago in a bar against Luc Tuymans with a Lardy set.
Looks like great fun!

yes, that's it - likes these (bigger than a ....dinner plate)

Great sets, I was never keen on the Lardy knights though. They are still beautiful however.
I thought about buying one many years ago, I also owned a little travel set that I believe was by Lardy, I believe I gave it to someone as a gift. It was a very nice little set, I think 3 inch kings it was wooden pieces and wooden box that opened into a board, felt lined inside. It had recessed brass hinges, it was beautiful. The board could also swivel. They don't make anything like that nowadays. Too bad.

Awesome pics, Mike! Thanks for sharing! I particularly love the rich color of the brown pieces.

You should get yourself a tournament sized Lardy. It's an iconic design.

Goodnightmike, that is a stately Lardy set. The matt finish is beautiful. The box is in excellent condition, and I like the green background with the brown pieces. I have always found the Lardy knights attractive, and the pawns are bold sized in front of the pieces. A perfect collector's item!

Thanks IMPractical, glad you enjoyed the set

You're welcome Chuck
Mike, that set looks excellent.
I particularly like the grain and look of the brown pieces.
I know that Lardy sets are notorious for warping. Does this set show a bit of a warp on its Kings and Queens?

Sad and true... bought a used (looking like new) 4 1/4" Lardy set (Boxwood&Rosewood) and only few days after purchase looked again at the photos... and could not believe that I missed it.... you should see the warp on the white queen... must be that the queens husbands oral hygiene left a thing or two to be desired...
Nevertheless, Iconic pieces, both in design of the each piece, and how subtle and wonderful (in its own right) the shading of the material - wood - can be. These pieces, properly waxed and cared for get really up a class in appearance.. it is a deep shame that these are not made (in their original form) any more.

I've never loved Lardy. The sets just look too cheap and industrial to my eye. That said, I have a few sets that I picked up randomly when the price seemed right. This is a set I bought a couple of years ago for £12, I think. It's big - too big, IMHO. The king measures 4 1/4 inches. From the design and sticker on the box, I'm assuming its a Lardy. Looks as if it's never been used.
Thanks, Up! It's hard to capture the size of the set-up in photos. The best way is to look at the shot of the knight in my hand. It's a monster. A well-carved, richly patinaed monster.
The board is impressive. I never thought I'd get a Drueke this large. But when I saw how crowded this set was on a 2.5" board, I began to think it would look great on a 2.75" Drueke. I opened up Ebay, and there one was. And with a reasonable Buy It Now price. I was really, really lucky.
Congratulations on the set-up, cgrau. I must say I was quite at a loss of words when I saw the set sitting on that Drueke. Absolutely gorgeous! Both pieces and board look to be in amazing shape. You must be one happy guy.
I think I can get an idea of how big the whole thing is. I mean, that is the same table you've been using to post pics all along and the set makes it look like a card table. Well, that might be going a bit too far but, maybe you're going to need higher chairs. Enjoy!
