The Meisterschach RCR Terry set

Sort:
Pawnerai

It's taken me a while to track down a Meisterschach RCR Terry set here in the US. At first glance it appears to be a bog standard 3.75" German Knight set. But if you take the time to look closer, you'll see some interesting details only seen with this particular 3.75" carving. The main characteristic of this set in my eyes are the thin Rooks with flared out tops. They go so well with the the pinched water drop bishops. Just a small subtle difference that most people won't notice.

Twelve photos below on a 2.25" sq Drueke. If you enjoy the pics, leave a note or a thumbs up at the very least, so I know I'm not wasting my time with posting these photos. I know it's not exactly a "glamorous" set. Hah!

I almost picked up one on EBay Germany. Same size still not seeing images on here. Do you think it’s Indian made? The one I saw with a brown wood dark side looked like it was. Nice set liked the knight’s snout.

Using a different browser yes that’s the one nice.

Yeah, it's still annoying... when using the Chess App on iPhone, when posting more than 2-3 images, no images show up and the formatting gets screwy. But when using the Safari Browser on the iPhone, all images and formatting appear fine. And of course when using a desktop computer or laptop, it's all fine as well.

Chess App 4.1.12 (most recent)
iPhone 13. iOS 16.3.1 (most recent)

I think it was maybe 2-3 Chess App updates ago when multiple images in a single post started not appearing correctly on the forum. I've sent Support an email and posted on the Support forum. But so far, nothing.

Yes this ongoing issue is frustrating. I recently received good support for another issue - I will raise this with Support too; hopefully multiple voices from subscribers might spurn some action.

….

Cool pieces too - their flawless finish has me thinking they are quite modern/recently manufactured. Do you know where this set was made? Also - the dark pieces have a lovely grain - is it Anjun wood perhaps?

Yes Arian that why Indian was my guess
Well executed really nice set I should have tried harder to win it on eBay.

@Powderdigit From what I can gather online, this specific Meisterschach RCR Terry set stopped production in the early 90s. I agree with you about the beautiful grain in the dark pieces. The paper label on the side of the box says "Palisander / Buchsbaum".

Palisander is German for Rosewood (Dalbergia)
Buchsbaum is German for Boxwood

Hi @Pawnerai, thanks again for posting high-quality pictures here. I love this slightly particular German design. Some time ago I saw a blog post comparing the differences in details and manufacturing quality between different German Knight sets from different manufacturers, and looking yours, seems that this was one of the included on the post, mentioning the more refined finish on rooks and bishops.

EDIT:

Ok, what I saw wasn't a blog post, but a post of 2016 here on the forum:

Beautiful photos included!

@jtorrex Thanks for the compliments! The photos in that 2016 posting is actually what started me on the quest to find a 93mm, Meisterschach RCR Terry. Hah! I can FINALLY cross it off my list.

I don't know if it's proper to this particular set or company producing them, but the knight stands out for me as well. The somewhat heavier snout than what I usually see in german knight sets is aesthetically very pleasing.  I like it alot more than the harsch arc you see alot like in this one:

And "not a glamorous set" is in the eye of the beholder.  The french have a saying that you can't or shouldn't argue about taste.

Please do continue to post your pictures and set reviews. Posts like these by people like you and many others around here is what makes me visit these parts of the forum on an almost daily basis.
