Thin 4-piece chess board?

Sort:

At a recent chess tournament I saw a person with a very interesting chess board. It broke apart into four pieces, for easy travel, but when assembled it hung together with magnets so that it would not fall apart in a time scramble.

Now, you might think I am talking about The Stack, but this chess board was much thinner -- only a centimeter or two thick. That's the problem: I can't find it online because every Google search returns boards as thick as The Stack. Anyone know where to find something like this?

The thin 4 piece chessboards were designed and marketed by Izmet Fekali several years ago. The first batch was handmade using 1/4” birch plywood and painted using the masking tape method. He made +/- 50 or so of these boards. The second batch was professionally silkscreened on 1/4” plywood. As far as I know, only one or two batches of these, totalling a hundred or so, were made. They were marketed by Izmet directly and also through NOJ. Izmet made some noise last year about having some more done, but I haven't heard anything since. That said, You could easily make one the same way Izmet did at first. His boards were 2” squares, but you could make one 2.25”  You can get 2’x2’ quarter sheets of finish grade birch ply at Home Depot. The magnets used are rare earth magnets commonly found at most woodworking stores, Home Depot and Lowes. Here are a couple of pics of the silkscreened boards (pics by Izmet):

Best Chessboard Ever! I wish more were available.

I contacted Fekali twice regarding the BCE boards. In Dec 2020 and again in Dec 2021. Both times, he seemed somewhat disinterested in making more. Not wanting to pry, I didn't ask details. I'll wait 6 months until I nudge him a third time on Dec 2022. It's become an annual tradition.

Maybe @ShelbyLohrman? He says he's always looking for new/borrowed ideas. Something like this is a no-brainer chess product for him. A walk in the park. It's staring at him right in the face. I'd contact him myself, but he's ghosted me the last 3 times.

What'd you do (this time)?  wink wink wink

Seriously, he may just be super busy with the transition/move to his latest gig.

I bought a board like that from Colorado Woodworker on Etsy. I like the concept, but wasn’t thrilled with the execution. Hard to get those pieces to line up right, and the finish was not as smooth as I had hoped.

@CringeBlunderman, I have two four piece boards from Colorado Woodworker from back when he first started making them. They aren’t quite as well finished as the JLP Stack, but they don’t cost as much, either. And they are as thick as the Stack. The OP was looking for a thin board.

Yes, the thin board that is in four pieces and magnetic should be the Best Chess Board Ever from Izmet who has The Best Chessmen Ever.

I own one of these boards and it’s great.  I also own 2 of the Tower boards from Colorado Woodworker and use those a lot.

I did buy the Stack boards from The Chess House when I was buying a lot of stuff.  Those boards are nice, however I prefer the 2.25” square size of my boards from Colorado Woodworker.  Plus, I was able to choose the woods from Brad and that is really nice.

I use my Best Chess Board Ever board, on occasion, with my Noj Dubrovnik II sets.
