Thin felt used on unweighted pieces

Probably paper thin. Have you checked out a place like Michaels. They have a ton of items. Any wool you find will not be paper thin, just the nature of it unless there is the likes and I do not know of it. Paper felt can be found in a few places, I think Walmart has it as well as Michaels. Good luck.
whoops, sorry it was sideways...
stauntonmaster - I've re-felted many sets. Quite good at it in fact! Just a question of the right material for an unweighted set. Could you be more descriptive about "thin velvet type material sold in many stores" ?
so what's the verdict?
Where can I purchase the right thin felt-like material for unweighted chess pieces?
a link to buy online would be a huge help - I live in the middle of nowhere ! Thanks

My wife says to look for a quilt store, they have very nice felts available. Even here in Rattlesnake Junction we have 3 quilt stores but if you do not have one where you live try some of the online quilting places like Missouri Star or Quilt Crossing. Much nicer than the plastic stuff at Michaels or hobby Lobby. Good luck!

I needed to replace some of the felts on a 1960s, unweighted Soviet set I purchased this year. I bought some sheets of thin, black felt with adhesive backing, and it was pretty easy to just cut the felt into squares and then peel, press and trim.
They work fine...and only my laziness has prevented from refelting the rest of the set.
Hi guys - I've been working on restoring some old sets (aka replacing felts
).
So, I have a spanish unweighted set that I love and I used the thinnest wool felt I could on it. Now, all of the pieces are wobbly. The original felts on the bottom were so thin as to almost not be there at all. Being unweighted pieces, they were more stable this way.
I'm having a hard time identifying what the best thing felt to use is on unweighted pieces. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Dan
