I just won this chess set on Ebay, but feel that I went a little overboard with the amount I finally paid. Is it possible to share a link so I can get some opinions?

VINTAGE CATALIN? BAKELITE? CHESS SET METRO GAMES NEW YORK | eBay

Avatar of JT2007

220 pounds seems like a good price for a vintage chess set. From the type and style of carving and dye, I would guess early 1900s. Personally, I would not pay 220 pounds for a chess set, but that's because I don't get why people like fancy stuff. But definitely a good price range, I think for a vintage.

I was trying to get it for  around £160 including postage , but pushed myself to £220 . At least I got nectar points which covered £7.50.....Anyway I think I will be happy to use it as an analysis board. I like the colours.

I have no clue what a set like that is worth, but it looks very cool and has a lot of character!

Thanks, it is the first bakelite set I have bought so was not sure.

@sleazymate - This is an old chess set made by E.S.Lowe, first advertised around 1946. The pieces are made of catalin and the colours were described as either red & white or red & butterscotch. I have this set in an original Lowe case (see below), but the same pieces were sold under the Metro brand in the case you have. These sets are sought after by collectors. The price you paid is not a steal, but reasonable and not unusual at all. I have rarely seen a set like this offered for prices below 300 US$. If you want to know more about it, you should get Duncan Pohl's book on American Chess Sets, which I highly recommend.

Thank you for this information. Does your set come with it's original chessboard, like mine seems to ?

No, my set is pieces only, no board.

@sleazymate - Did Victor provide any further information on the set and board?

I have no further information. The set has been marked as dispatched, so I should get it within a few days.

The extra money you paid will fade from memory. The enjoyment you get from it will be worth far more in the long run.

@sleazymate - I think you can relax. There is another one on offer on ebay and the asking price is much higher, even though it does not even come with the original box, it seems. Compared to that your set was a steal.

I received the set a few minutes ago. I am very happy with it. Regarding the other one on offer, I find that US Ebay often have higher prices compared to UK / European Ebay.

Congratulations.  Look like a great set.  I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
