Great advice! and as far as finding a deal and buying more to save more . that is the principle I live by when purchasing IPAs and lagers!

And they can still brew it faster than you can drink it!

Great set, Info!

Thanks cgrau!

Today I got this set on the mail (70's mini Tal?).

I bought it as a gift for my 4 year old little daughter. I have been giving her a set each birthday. She placed the pieces on the board for the photos. She knows how to set the pieces the right way, but she thought they would look better this way.

Lucky girl, Info! Fascinating set. Unique knights. Are they plastic? Or wood? The patina of the white knight is so different from that of the rook next to it in. Might they be from different sets initially? Do the felts match? A great acquisition!

Another French set (Lardy?) on a Drueke board. The Kings are 3" tall. I didn't notice until I looked at the pictures, but this board needs a dusting!

Thanks, cgrau. I have only recently gotten into chess, and I have really been enjoying  Chernev's Logical Chess. It's like having a favorite uncle (who happens to be very knowledgeable about chess) patiently talk me through a bunch of interesting games. I love how he explains what's going on.

I am thoroughly enjoying Soltis' work Soviet Chess 1917-1991 and my miniature Latvian set is an excellent companion.

Thanks, cgrau. I finally got that book (in softcover) and couldn't be happier. And the set adds a nice feel.

It upsets me that the publisher put Alekhine's picture on the cover when it should be Botvinnik or Karpov. Alekhine? Even the book says the Bolsheviks nearly shot him.

With a non-Soviet set to boot.

What a great thread--thanks to chuck and all the collectors for sharing these great pics!

Most of the time when in my study, I like a "library size set," which I take to mean 3" Kings.  But this week's study of Magnus Carlsen's games had me bring out my Swedish "Tavlings modell" set on a 2 1/4 " green and white vinyl board. (I don't have a Norwegian set--are they different?)

Impractical

to be more accurate:  this is a 3" King set on a 2 1/4" board.  It is apparently considered appropriate tournament size

Great looking set, Mark! What a patina on the white pieces!

3.75" Pioneer set from Regency Chess on a 2" walnut and maple board.

Nice set, not sure about the Knight though. Kind of looks like a US Marine with a high and tight flat top.

The set is very nice, very clean looking.

Great pics, Lou! Arlindo and I were chatting about this the other day. That same set is offered under another name by ChessBazaar.

Lou, what are you analyzing with that sharp set?

Rsava,

Most Staunton style chess pieces incorporate a protruding ridge in the tapered shank of the piece, which gives the impression that the piece is sitting on a pedestal. Eliminating this ornate design element, as in the case of the Pioneer set (and the Noj BCE set), gives the pieces a cleaner more modern look, making them appear taller than they actually are. This also provides for a narrower base, allowing the set to fit on a smaller (in this case) 2" chess board.

The simple knight design in the Pioneer set reduces the cost of production, allowing it to be sold at bargain category price of only $69.
