Tournament Checkers Board Review.

So what is a Tournament Checkers Board Review doing in a Chess Equipment thread? Both games share the same style of board. Just one game used all 64 squares and the other only 32 squares. Growing up I remember having a cheap combo set of both games. Here's a photo of it set up for actual tournament play.

The official tournament size for Checkers is 2 inch or 50 mm squares. This got me to thinking about some of my smaller size chess sets. By smaller I mean in the size of the bases. 1.5" base Kings will work on 2.25" boards but I find them to be swimming a bit. It's OK but I would much rather have them on an optimum square size and that happens to be 2". Here's my Chess Bazaar 3.0 Dubrovnik set on the Checkers tournament board.

Here's a picture of one other method for checking square to piece ratio.

So a set with 1.5" base for the King is the largest size set I would ever use on a 2" square. Even a set with a base of 1.375" would work but in my opinion would be the smallest set I would ever use on a 2" square. Here's my Dubrovnik Club set on a the Checkers tournament board.

As you can tell in the pictures this board is like the PVC folding vinyl boards but slightly smaller. The board measures 18" X 18" square. It is extremely difficult finding 2" or 50 mm travel friendly chessboards. Especially ones with green and white squares. I believe that these boards will hold up over time. So long as they are not abused. If you are like me. Who wants to play a game of Checker here and there. Well this board was made for that. I personally like American Pool Checkers and Russian Checkers the most over Straight Checkers. The best part after receiving my board is there was no heavy vinyl smell. Big plus on that one. The board costed me $25 with free shipping. I got the board directly from The American Checker Federation Store. They offer this board in numbered and unnumbered along with the version I posted and one with forest green and light beige squares. It's a board that won't be used in chess tournaments but defiantly can be used at club and with family and friends. Just another option to use for smaller chess sets and still have that classic green and white look of chess tournament board.
