Trying to find special chess board!

I am trying to find a chess board for some pieces that I have.  My parents were into ceramics.  They fired and painted their own ceramics, they were quite good.  While they did this, they created some chess pieces.  They have since given me the chess set, but unfortunately I don't have a chess board.  The pieces are NOT the standard pieces.  They are about 4 inches tall and about 3 inches wide.  The board that I would need, would have to have about 2 or 3 inch squares.  The colors are black with a silver accent, and antique white with a light brown accent.  Does anyone know of a place that would sell or make something of this size?

You stated that the pieces have a base of 3.0 inches. Realistically, you want to have a chess board with at least 3 to 3.25 inch squares, at least. I don't know of too many board of that size, especially of such quality that will compliment your parent's skill.

I will keep looking in a few places, but is there the possibility for you parents to make you a board? Maybe some one in their group of ceramic peers?

four inch ceramic tiles would work nicely - mount them on 3/4 " plywood and put a molding on it. It would be the heaviest board you have ever used, but it would look nice with ceramic chess pieces....

Ceramic or vinyl tile will work though putting ceramic pieces on a ceramic tile is asking for breakage.  Or get some Pergo from the home center.  How about a piece of leather onto which you dye a checkerboard? I've done that before, though with a much smaller board.  As big as this board is going to be (3.5 x 8 = 28") without a border I'd probably go ahead and make a table top out of it.

Lots of options.

You guys have given me some great ideas!  The tile, leather, etc sound really interesting.  I will have to look into these and get some prices for it.Wink

Have you checked out www.customchess.com? It's a one-man shop, I believe, specializing in custom chessboards. I have one on order. A pleasure to work with.

Checking back in and reading others comments - good thoughts of wanting softer surfaces and alternate materials, stealing from the pergo or flooring idea - theres cork flooring if you check into that idea at all and think it comes in different colors, downfall- might dent and stain- like the rugged look?
