Is someone selling them?

bananamoon

It's indeed the heavy one I've.

For those looking for a set similar to the discontinued Ultimate set, here is a dimensional chart of the original. Total set weight is 52 ounces.

Milliern, I posted some links to a version of it that is lighter weight made by another company called Sterling Games Single. The weight looks to be 1.4pounds for the whole set. While not nearly the same as ACE at least the pieces are very similar.

A month ago I posted this but no1 seemed to be interested :-).

Make me a decent offer and I'll sell it. The shipping will not be cheap, it's a heavy set. Next Wednesday 06 22 1916 is the earliest day I can make it to the post office.  And I think PayPall is the best payement method. If you see other set you would like to buy .... please feel free.

Where was everyone when Shelby had this project on kickstarter?

TundraMike

While dimensions may be similar that has nothing to do with the design, shapes, aesthetics, of the pieces.

JoeyTroy

wiscmike, no clue wish I knew about it.

TundraMike

The only way to get an Ultimate set is to buy an old one or wait till Shelby makes some but that requires money up front for the molds.

Can 3D printing be a more affordable method? Don't know a lot about 3D printing but seems logic.

I figure you have this table for a lot of sets. I'm looking for a DGT Timeless style set or "Championship" style set with a base/ht ratio > =0.4.

JoeyTroy

No wonder it failed it was set for 1 month :P Need more time than that to get to the masses.

House of Chess has a similar set, 3.75" king with a 1.56" base for a ratio of .416 for $50 plus $13 shipping.

I reached out to Shelby will see if he responds. Sure be nice if he was open to doing this again. I can connect to our local venue of chess players but I recommend to him to see if he could ask chess.com to send out a mass emailing.

I know that a lot of people like the plastic sets, especially in this Ultimate design and weight.  In fact I have one.

However, I feel there is a better option available.

The originator of the Ultimate Chess set was Dewain Barber that started and owned American Chess Equipment (which he sold to Shelby Lohrman).

When this set was being produced and doing so well, Dewain contracted with a manufacturer in India to make the set in wood.

Ron Lohrman, Shelby's father, who owns The Rochester Chess Center took over the wood sets from the same manufacturer that Dewain first got.  I remember that Dewain had quit selling the wood version before he sold the company to Shelby.

Ron and the Rochester Chess Center still sells the Ultimate Chess set in Rosewood and Sheesham.  I bought one in Rosewood and I'm here to tell you this is an awesome set.  And in my opinion and the opinions of some friends that have played with both sets, this wood set is better than the plastic one.  And we are talking about the authentic Ultimate plastic set that everyone loves.

The set weighs 3 lbs, 2.5 ounces.

From what I understand, Shelby is still looking to have the Ultimate set made anew in plastic.

I was wondering if anyone that has the Ultimate Chess Set can weigh the pieces for me? I am hoping to see the weight in ounces. I bought a similiar set and wanted to install my own weights. I would greatly appreciate it.

Ouch!

I wish I hadn't seen this thread!

I bought 5 sets of ultimate chess pieces about 10 years ago when they were cheap.  I gave 4 sets away to friends who were trying to get their children interested in Chess.  As far as I know this went nowhere... sets are probably in a closet or the trash somewhere.

Kept one set for myself though... happy.png
