Trying to match a color is a funny thing, our brains are not wired for it, I'm sure you have seen this trick before with simple shading.  Both the A and B squares are the same exact color.

I'm not buying it.  If one can distinguish between two colors, then they cannot be the same.  In the given graphic representation, I can distinguish between colors A and B....

That is exactly the point.  They look different, but they are not.

The easiest way to prove this is to cut one out (easiest to see this if you cut out B, soon as you cut it out your brain will see the true color of the B square, as it is removed from the shade of the cylinder) and paste it onto the other, you will see they are a perfect match, the same color.

Same is true when trying to match a color.  You think its the same but it is not, it can be very different.

Our brain puts colors in groups making it difficult to distinguish different shades of the same color.  This puzzle proves just how bad we are at this.

BTW: I like the color swatch you picked out, maybe a shade darker. :-)

What operating system are you using?  Version?

You can always print the image as well, and then just have to fold the paper to reveal the colors are the same.

See the additional Pantone color sample links I added in my post#252....several are slightly darker than Pantone P 7-1 C.....but all appear to be a close rendering of what I consider to be a cream/natural color....at least, to my eyes....

Hopefully we (or I) can convince Shelby to agree with these suggestions.....

Ok....I took your suggestion and printed the image on my new HP Ink Jet printer (which I just purchased a few days ago), then cut out the Square B and overlaid it onto Square A....... and voila!......they matched exactly.....amazing!!   Hard to believe, but true...!  Sorry I doubted you Kenardi!

its something you just have to see with your own eyes to believe. our brain misleads us all the time.  things are not always as they seem.

Hopefully its not too late.  I have a bad feeling about the 127 U color selection.  then again, I didn't care much for the original either.

Agreed....That is, regarding the 127 U color selection.  But I do like the original, off-white color of the original Ultimates which is not the same as, or even close to the 127 U yellowish color.

What you guys are looking at doing is to change the color from the original.  I'm not saying this is wrong at all.

I believe that Shelby and his company are looking to duplicate what they can of the original set because it was such a successful set.

I bet that when the set was first being designed, Dewain Barber just told his manufacturer that he wanted the white pieces to be a cream or natural color and didn't get too specific on the exact color or tint.

I pulled my original Ultimate plastic set out the other day and realized that the original white pieces are indeed kind of a yellowish cream color, more yellow than the natural colors usually have.  I bet that's what we are going to get, at least in this first batch.  But that batch is something like 3000 sets so it could take awhile to go through them before they come out with a second batch.

Also, I don't know if Shelby has emailed the approval to their manufacturer in China yet.  I bet he has because they do want to get this set out for sale as soon as possible.

Agreed but I believe that the lot of 3000 sets will sell out quite rapidly since there hasn't been a plastic Ultimate chess set for sale for a couple of years now. I just hope there is an ivory white version in the pipeline after this batch is produced. Those example photos of the ivory white version were really impressive. How could you go wrong with a black and ivory white tournament sized plastic set? It's a classic color scheme. I'm ordering two sets when they're available.

I dug out my original to see the color again. This set has some serious (outside) play wear and has held up VERY well. I don't mind the more yellow look of the new "white" pieces myself. I like them better when they are contrasted to a light squared board. null

I guess the fact that ivory is such a classic choice is part of the reason why I'm willing to take my chances with the cream. There are so many ivory sets out there. I want a set that looks different.

Just to keep everything into perspective so far. This is a split screen shot of the original Ultimate sets on the left side and the new prototypes in the discussed new "cream' and "ivory white color schemes to the right of the screen. Bearing in mind that camera settings, lighting, etc...could all be at different adjustments. I personally would love to have my set in the new "Ivory white",  or Ronbo710's original "cream" colored ultimate set. Just my 2¢.

I agree and would personally like an ivory set.

The original Ultimate sets are all the same color.  They just look different in the pictures due to cameras and lighting.

Thanks Kendari that helps, but those single rook shots are of the original ultimate sets none are from the new prototypes. There is a distinct color variation in both of those bottom photos. The left shot looks more beige in color than the right creamier colored rook. From the two rooks, I'd pick the one to the right for my new set.

Yeah, all original except for top right and middle right image and look how different the color of the original pieces look in every image.  I don't own the original pieces but have played several games with others that do -- I don't recall any of the sets looking as yellow as the top left image -- would like to see better images of the prototypes on a board or something --  127 U just looks very yellow both the prototypes (top right) and the swatch under the rook on the wood surface (bottom right).  Hope I'm wrong about the yellow -- the piece design is very nice, the color not so much -- you don't see many people playing with yellow pieces often, pretty much never around my area.

The most accurate image of the original color, I think, is the image in the bottom right.
