How is it coming Shelby? Will we be seeing it for sale by Thanksgiving? I know when it is done it will be the best a plastic set can be and still be practical.
Ultimate chess set

Thanks for the update. I'm really impressed by the lengths you're going to to get it right. That said, I'm not bothered by lead, either.

Technically Lou, when dealing with pigments or solid colors black is a combination of all the colors while white is an absence of any color.
It is with light that the colors combine to make White light and an absence of light colors produces Black.
But, I certainly understand your point and agree.
The problem that I see is that most all plastic sets have shown Black as the color of the dark pieces, historically. And the Black is the same as Ebony, also recently Ebonized, in the pieces.
Most of the light pieces in the plastic sets have been a beige or what most call Natural. The White pieces have been copies of and even called Ivoty.
I own 4 or 5 plastic sets with one of them being an original Ultimate plastic set. The light pieces are that beige or Natural while the dark pieces are indeed black.
And all my other plastic sets have the dark pieces being Black. Heck, I just realized this very well might be a big reason why I don't ever use these plastic sets to play actual games with.
You have shown pictures of that one plastic set you own with the folding board where the dark pieces are a faux wood. I believe it even has a graining to the finish. I like that set.
The thing most seem to like about the Ultimate set is the heft or weight of the pieces along with its standard piece styling. The plastic is also pretty much indestructible from what I have experienced.
So, if they did come up with a plastic Ultimate set with the dark pieces being a faux wood that might very well be kind of perfect.
Of course, I own the Rosewood Ultimate set from The Rochester Chess Center and it was made to be identical to the plastic version in design and weight but be made of wood. I like it the most of my casual wood sets.
Here is a picture of that Rosewood Ultimate set on a Glen Butterman, Walnut, thin mousepad board:
looks great on the mousepad board
I've read papers about companies selling high density thermoplastics that can be injection molded and marketed as lead replacements, probably worth researching, maybe a combination including steal might be worth a shot? Anyways what I do I know about it, good luck Shelby and I hope you can pull it off. I advise those who are cool with lead to consider the environmental effect of disposing of lead, it's one of the most highly toxic substances for a reason.

import the pieces without the lead .. u can have the buyer insert the lead in themself and crazy glue the bottom themself or leave it blank.. problem solved..

It is now May 2017 and American Chess Equipment Ultimate chess set is still out of stock. I had this set once but sold it to a fellow chess player who donated it to the Boy Scouts. It is an ok set but the weights are an issue. They always came loose.

Did you read the thread? Shelby has to overcome the obstacles including having weights that do not come loose. It will be well worth the wait. You can also buy the wooden version now off the Rochester Chess Center.

I did and I wish him the best to make it happen. Right now I have sets that I am satisfied with. That can change when I get the itch to get another set. I do have a wooden set that is discontinued. The Olympian 3 7/8 ebonized boxwood from chess café. I really enjoy playing a game using that set.
Well if the itch does come I suggest you seriously consider the wood version of the Ultimate Set. The Rochester Chess Center, www.chessset.com, does sell it. I own this set in both the Rosewood and Sheesham and it is excellent. I also own a plastic Ultimate but prefer the wood version.

They only have Sheesham available in somewhat of a price range for me. I am not a real fan of Sheesham sets. I prefer Ebonized or Rosewood sets myself. It is my personal taste in wood for chess sets. Sheesham blends too much with dark squares on a wooden board.

Sheesham looks good on a green/white board.
looks like they have rosewood as well: http://www.chessset.com/ultrosewood.html
It does. Someone tried to capitalize on a fantastic set. Too bad the company doesn't actually focus on chess.
