Ultimate chess set

Received my 2 sets. Only opened the one but it's in perfect condition. The pieces are great quality. Great weight. The color is pretty strange in the sense that it looks different in everything light. When you first look at them they look very yellow. But after your eyes adjust they look a little closer to cream.

I have 4 of the new Ultimate sets from ACE and in my apartment all the bulbs are soft white and the sets are definitely of a yellow hue. Here I've placed the light army against a cream colored towel, the color that the light army was first envisioned to appear as but the coloring went to the "butter" yellow color look. Take a closer view of this photo which was taken in natural daylight from my kitchen just by my patio area. The coloring may vary if the bulbs in certain homes are of daylight styles or bright white versions, but to the naked and natural lighted eye they are, for all debates and discussions, a "butter" yellow.  See for yourself and come to your own conclusion. I still love the heft, size and weight of the sets but some pieces had issues with loose weights which will be taken care of by Shelby. He stands proudly by his products and will do good by his response to any issues with orders. Some more photos how the set looks with a wenge, rosewood and lightwood mousepad rollup board from ACE. It measure 20" square with 2.25" playing squares. The playing material surface is "cloth like" in texture. Very nice feel like suede and the pieces move smoothly on this type of surface.

They're definitely yellowish but they're really nice to play with.  They feel great.  I brought a set with me to the chess club last night and I have to say that I liked the look of my set a whole lot more than all the other boring white cheap sets.

Totally agree with you the set's light army color tends to stand out all by itself & plays very well, easy on the eyes, great feel to the pieces and can contrast beautifully with any color combination of silicone, mousepad, linen, paper or vinyl rollup chessboards. I would play them on wood boards as well but that's my preference as it may not be for others to partake.

The pieces are hefty.  The yellow color is more like corn than butter.  (not horrible)  its one of those shades that noticeably changes with the light in the room.

Definitely a nice design.  I like the pawn design very much.  I think the reason this set is so popular.

Weight consistency is excellent (excellent quality test, this set passes with flying colors), in grams:

Pawns = 31-32g

Rooks = 62-63g

Knights = 65-66g

Bishops = 65-66g

Queens = 77-78g

Kings = 87-88g

About 25% of the pieces in the sets I received have loose weights, or could be the cap on some.  it's not horrible, just something that I find very annoying.  Will have to give them a test run this week and see how annoying.  I have had pieces that rattle much worst.  This is the only issue that I feel should be corrected by the manufacturer.  Still, not supper bad, just not as good as I think it should be.

The bases are felted, real felt not paper junk, the felt is a little thin and does not go to the edge on all the pieces (bishops), but it is felt.  (way better than paper felt)

The finish on the pieces, a matte finish, no glare, very nice! (big plus)

Seems are pretty good, most noticeable seem is on the bishops, this is common.  No major seem flaws on the pieces I received.

Overall, I would recommend this set to a friend, if you like the design get one!

You can lower the price by ordering more than one set, save on shipping.  Order one for a friend if you only want one set.

I LOVE the color of the light pieces. Reminds me of my favorite candy - white chocolate - YUM happy.png

Where can I get that board that QtoQlevel3  has? It looks sort of thick like that mouse pad board.

Never mind. It was the same place.

Curious when the set will be available in Europe.

Bananamoon,

I have been trying to get Tao and Malcolm over at London Chess and Bridge to start carrying them.  They are one of the largest distributors in Europe and ship everywhere.  I will get them on the phone in the morning

thanks

DGT makes high quality Fischer/Spassky style plastic chess sets which many believe are the best. The chessmen are extremely solid and well-made and they cost only $25-$30

Are they also weighted/felted ? I ask the question because they have a Starter Pack with chessmen + DGT clock + Training software and I wonder if it is a really good deal.

The above is simply wrong.

Lol no they don't.  I have to say you're the most unique troll I've ever come across.  First troll to make up non-existent chess sets and post about them in unrelated threads.

No, plastic sets are not meant for professionals.  You really are clueless, aren't you?

Talked with Tao from London Chess and Bridge,

If you want Ultimates over in Europe,  we need to convince him to carry them.  If you call their shop and ask for them to carry the Ultimate Chess Sets,  maybe we can get them to carry them for all of you in Europe.

It is the best thing I can do to save people on shipping to Europe.  Make sure to be nice,  the guys at LC&B are the best chess vendors in Europe and very good friends of mine.  Their selection and customer service are second to none.  We just need to convince them to carry the set!

Want to take a second to compliment Shelby's service in this thread.  Had a minor issue that he took care of with great haste.  Very satisfied.

has anyone posted old ultimate and new ultimate sets side by side? I'm curious in the similarity in color or difference

Ask and ye shall receive...

The new version has the larger and more yellow pieces.

I had both sets out last Monday evening and played with them.

The new version does handle and play better during a game.
