Ultimate chess set

I logged in and went to my original order but I did not get the promotion rate. I was charged the full price. I messaged Shelby and now I wait to see if I cancel or not.

thanks eyechess!  It looks like the new pieces are much more yellow.  The new version is very close in shape, though.

The Ultimate set is my first order from ACE.  There was a slight hiccup with the order but the speed with which Shelby corrected it was impressive.  Between that and the occasional phone updates when delays occurred, I have to say the service has been excellent.

As for the pieces, my quick review would be: The weight and feel of the set is perfect. The matte black pieces look amazing. The yellow cream pieces. . . Well. . .  The yellow is not a deal breaker for me.  Not sure I'll come to love it but I do love playing with this set a lot.   Kudos to Shelby for persevering through all the setbacks.

Nice board M_697! Rosewood and maple 2.25" squares?

Moriarty_697

Not totally sure. It's an old House of Staunton tournament board I bought as part of a package years ago. I keep looking at nicer boards but this one still works well.

What’s with the yellow pieces? Is that intentional?

I LIKE the color. To me it is just about making them different.

The pieces are so good its worth the suboptimal color.  I've gotten used to it and now it looks yellow cream to me.

I think there is something to the idea that you get used to it.  I initially was repulsed by the color in the photographs shown here.  When I received the sets, I thought they were pretty yellowish, but tolerable.  Now, I think they are pretty much perfect, and it's definitely tough to even notice they are yellow.  They just look off-white to me now.

Yellow color dazzles the eyes specially in bright environments. That is annoying during chess games.

Actually, the above is really wrong and off in the instance of this set.  This Stauntonmaster obviously does not know what he is talking about.

Once again, and in a completely different way than ever before, you guys on this forum are getting me to spend more money tear.png

I was one of the first to buy this new set.  In fact because of the sale price I bought 2 of them.

When the set came I was put off by the yellow color.  Every time I pulled the set out the yellow, that I call "neon butter" shocked my eyes.

When I first bought the sets I immediately opened one of them and handled the pieces and compared them to the original set I have.  I thought that this new set with its slightly larger dimensions actually felt better than the original.  But, it was over a week or so before I brought the set to our club and played a game with it.

After being shocked by the yellow, I decided to donate the one, unopened set to our club as a prize for an upcoming tournament.  I played one game with the set and realized that I really liked how it handled.  At the last minute I handed the set to a father of a 4th grader that has been coming to our club for a couple of years now and he's rated about 1500.  I decided I would wait for the next batch to come out before using one regularly.

Now, thanks to you guys and your stories of getting used to the color to the point of actually liking it, and your other stories, I went ahead and just ordered another one for my own use!  Luckily Shelby gave me the discount as this was the third and, yes, fourth of these sets I was buying from him.  I told him of giving away the first 2 sets and he laughed.  I bought a 4th set for another guy in our club that was telling me last night how this plastic set he uses is his favorite because of the weight.  He didn't realize that the set he owns is an original Ultimate set as I saw last night.

So, thanks a lot guys.

By the way, the 4th grader and his father thanked me again and again last night for giving him the set last week.

 Heh, heh, heh.

Yeah, Ron. I know the feeling. I think it was you who got me to spend more money on different sets a while back.

I blame Crau and and Eyechess for sharing beautiful sets and then "forcing" me to want them....now seeking an Olympic Argentino

No dazzling here. It's just yellow. Perhaps you were thinking gold plated or something ridiculous but these are just yellowish and play quite well. They're just not to everyone's liking.

Yet once again we get more wrong information from Stauntonmaster.

The best chess sets are the ones with rainbow colored pieces with boards that generate optical illusions

Yellow in any shape or form is not suitable for playing chess. Very light cream or ivory is more suitable.

Yet once again, the above statement is simply wrong.

It is not true that if you keep saying the same, fake and fraudulent facts that they will become true.

Neutral colors like light ivory and cream are best and this is the main colors used in tournaments.

The above is only an opinion.

I agree with Eyechess, neon butter is a PERFECT name for the color of my Ultimate set. IMO the new set is way higher quality than my old Ultimate, though the color is disappointing.
