Stunned. Stunned at how beautiful these pieces are. And the weight....  really well done. I was kind of worried about the contrast when I put them on my green tournament board, but when I used my new gray one from chesshouse everything just felt perfect. They are more yellow than the original but it's actually a really nice butter color with no shine (see image below comparing the pieces to very yellow plastic). Sorry for the picture quality. You will not regret your purchase. I would recommend inspecting your pieces. My bishops were slightly warped near the top. Overrall five stars!!

Alpha - Where did you get the blueish gray board?

Chesshouse.com is the only place I could find one like it. It also has considerably less glare than my green board as you can see from my photos. https://www.chesshouse.com/products/20-vinyl-roll-up-chess-board?variant=32275371393

If you buy the wood Ultimate set from The Chess House, you will experience the high quality of the Ultimate design as well as the higher quality of a wood set.  And at $150+, this is an affordable price.

I own 2 wood Ultimate sets that were sold by The Rochester Chess Center.  They're great.

Also, the Chavet 2.0 reproduction by Chess Bazaar, which I received this week, is just as nice as my wood Ultimate sets.

Is the size of the wooden Ultimate set you have about the same size as Shelby's plastic new version or smaller as far as girth, weight and height of the pieces if I may ask. I had glanced at the Chesshouse's offering of the wooden ultimates and they had them currently on backorder except for the higher priced ebony set and babul wood set. The anjawood is backordered and I had spoken with Paul from chess house and he said that the ebonized version will be re ordered for sale soon as well. I wonder if these sets are about the same size as yours or as large as Shelby's plastic set that he sells. I love the heft of the set especially the pawn pieces. It's what drew my interest when I saw a YouTube video with Susan Polgar playing a blitz match in Washington Square park with a  plastic Black and White Ultimate set (probably counterfeit)a few years ago titled "My Brillant Brain" giving a retrospect of how a female brain operates and becomes highly efficient in the learning process.

Her sister Judit Polgar posing with Shelby's newest iteration of the Ultimate Chess set.

Shelby a bright red coupled with black would look great and be different .

@ShelbyLohrman

1) Are you saying that the the next iteration of Ultimate Chess Set will be metal only and NOT plastic? Or both?

2) I was hoping for the "original" plastic set in the "original" color (what ever color you want to call it, as long as it is not yellow). Will this be available - yes or no?

3) And I assume that the $20 deal you mention above is for the current "Yellow" set that you are trying to sell out of, yes?

Please clarify.

Thank you.

I prefer the yellow myself but more of a toned down natural boxwood is better in my opinion. The OG cream I am not a fan of. I don't know I just can't really dig it. Since all the other players want the OG cream I am in the minority I guess. If you could get the white side to look like the color of the Drueke Players Choice that would be nice.

I just got off the phone with Shelby...

The plan is for the up coming production of Ultimate Chess Set to be produced in BOTH a PLASTIC set and, IN ADDITION, to also produce a METAL set.  For the plastic set the plan is to produce the light pieces in two colors - that is, in the same as, or not too different from the "original" color, as well as pieces that are actually "White".  So two different colors for the light pieces (but NOT yellow!).  Also noteworthy is that for the forthcoming plastic set, the weights will be glued-in so that the loose weights problem that some people had experienced with the previous edition is eliminated.

As far as the metal set is concerned, he is still undecided on the details of the production of the light colored pieces from the perspective of the color vs the metal work, etc. - i.e., the production details are unclear at the moment, so be patient until he gets these issues worked out.

Finally,I did not ask, nor did he give me any indication as to when these sets, plastic or metal, will be available.

Here is the set of the "original" Ultimate Chess Set.  Image taken from Shelby's website AmChessEq.com......based on all the feedback I've seen on these forums (I've read it all) I believe 99% of customers would be happy with the colors of this set....

In response to AlphaMelon's pictures of his Ultimate Chess Set on grey vinyl board. I did like it but I am not a fan on just the basic solid color Club vinyl chessboards. I got the granite No1 full color vinyl board from House of Staunton.

Here are a couple of pics of the board with my Ultimate Chess Set on it. I even like it better than the solid grey and buff vinyl board from chesshouse.com

Those cheap and flexible chess boards with printed designs of wood or stone patterns and varying colors are becoming more ubiquitous.

And may we all remember the late Glen Butterman for pioneering this board.  He tried and did improve on the flexible chess board. I have had mine since he invented it and it will last for decades and always will it lay flat and easily cleanable. Has his initials on the border of the board, will always remember him, rest easy my friend.

I think the reason is wood and stone printed designs are more appealing to people. You can get the look without the cost and weight of the real McCoy. My only beef with the full color printed boards is having the name and number of what the board is. This information is excessive and annoying. The website ad doesn't bother me but it will send you to uscf sales website. I know that there are wood grain printed mouse pad boards. However the color is off and it just doesn't look right. I like them but the vinyl print quality is so much better.

People like Snooper 69 amuse me. They claim to have bought my product, had problems with it, yet have not contacted me personally so we can work through the problem.

The same kind of people that say they are not attacking me personally, but call me grossly incompetent and saying that a child could handle a project like this...which is laughable.

So, why do you chose to act like this?  I post my contact info everywhere so problems like this can be taken care of.

You tell people that insert molding of all things would only cost an extra 50 cents a unit  the cheapest I found it would have added $4 to the production cost

have you sourced a company, paid them to do the mold and production, or anything to do with the production process?

do you know of any of the battles that I have had with the company that produced them for me? How even after I sent them the number they matched the color off of the computer screen instead of a damn PMS book? How every other set they have made was glued, but these used a friction hold?

and you sit on your high horse telling me how I am doing everything wrong despite never calling me with your problem?  This is why you are a troll  if you want to call me my personal phone number is 562-225-8324

last person that trolled me this hard was a 12 year old kid   Prove me wrong

I have to respect that. To stand behind your product and put your personal info out there so you can handle any problems. I knew there was a reason I was drawn to this site. We are Order 1271. Ultimate chess pieces and vinyl. Its due for delivery on Friday. If that set is as bomber as every says it is, I'll be ordering another before they disappear to put up.

I'm wondering: Apart from the controversial "yellow" colour for white, why is everyone so enthusiastic about this particular set? Sure, they do look well-made, and are certainly hefty. BUT: Dennis Petersen's Legend Alegria set looks *so* much better, and is even heavier-weighted. I would long have bought one if the shipping charge to Europe weren't so excessive.

Yes, it's $40 bucks - but just think about it: make on less home order for junk food, and you more than compensate for the price difference.  Just my two cents, of course.

I have to agree with this. I live in the same continent and it would cost me 50 bucks to ship this set which is more than the cost of the set itself.

the fine details on the knights of alegria and sharp crowns of queens are nice to look at, but for heavy use and or/blitz people prefer pieces that are more durable, short and wide, and with nothing pocking out. the yellow color is horible.

I have both of these sets. I do like the looks of the Alegria set more than the Ultimate. The natural color for White is better for the Alegria set. I personally don't mind playing blitz with either set. The design of the Ultimate set is more about not giving a you know what. Toss them in the bag and bring them out and just play. The Ultimate set is just a fatty set that is designed to be used and abused. This is why people love the Ultimate Chess Pieces. I have gotten used to the butter yellow color. As long as you pair it with a good color for your board. It becomes a non issue in my opinion.

@ShelbyLohrman I agree with the advertising on the board is a bit much. However since it is the 1st of its kind. I can understand why it is there. The website doesn't bother me as much as the number and what the print is. This is in my opinion overkill and not needed to advertise the product.

I know I am being nit-pickey, but the advertisements in the 4 edges of the granite board seem a little overboard to me.

What do you guys think?

Shelby

I completely agree...

LondonDungeon

It does take away from it. But it seems like most of the customs are flawed.  They could have just stamped a corner square like chess house and Bobby Fisher editions do.
