@pbwilson If you went to the Naval Academy. Blue & Yellow would be fitting for the Blue Angels as well. LOL! Yeah the yellow can be a bit over powering but I have found to make lemonade out of lemons. Get it? With the right color of board. The yellow isn't too bad. Since these bold yellow sets were a one time run. Might be a collector set 10-20 years down the road. Ivory/White to me is over powering and blends too much for me. On wood grain printed roll up boards they are fine but as for the plain jane green & white boards. I don't like it so much.

"Isn't too bad". So you admit it's bad. No offence but I fail to see how you pairing a green board with black and nicotine stained yellow pieces is an improvement. They are hideous. You can't polish a turd.

Grow a backbone!  If every chess player said it how it is. The pieces are great but the colour is horrendous. I will not buy them then maybe we would have the set properly made. But you guys pretend you like the colour when you clearly think it's bad. And you paid for it? Why? If everyone didn't buy them then the new sets would be made real quick.

The way I see it is that Shelby is making the consumer suffer for his error of judgement. He is refusing to make more until he sells every single hideous yellow monstrosity he owns. He expects chess players to pay for his mistake and is holding the chess world to ransom until they do so. Any other businessman worth his salt would take the hit like a man. Reproduce the set and recover some of the losses.

Nice to see another keyboard warrior here!  Your expertise in our industry is?!?!

Just remember, this is a free and open market.  You don't have to buy anything you don't want to.  Anyone who truly knows me understands I am one of the last innovators in the market (yes, I am being a little pompous here!)  When the minimum run on a set like this is 3000 units, I would hope a rational person would understand me wanting to recoup some of my money from the current run.

The goal here is to put out the best set possible.  Learn from our mistakes and make it better.  This takes time.  We needed to see how the sets held up, get feedback, and figure out ways to make it better and then go from there.  That takes time.

Just out of curiosity...are you going to buy one of the new updated sets when they come out, or are you just bloviating here to make yourself look better?

I agree with EyeChess.  Send me $25,000 and I will have this on the shelves in a month and a half.

If you want to cut me down...go for it.  It is one of the drawbacks about being an innovator in our industry.  There will always be haters.

Thanks

Please hire someone to do your PR for you. Calling anyone that criticises you a "keyboard warrior" is just juvenile. While you're at it, perhaps hire someone as well that can test the colours before you give the go ahead for a run that apparently cost you over $25000. Business man to business man. These failings are on you. No one else so try taking some responsibility.

"Your expertise in the industry is?"

Grow up. If I'm in the market for a BMW do I need to be a qualified mechanic or engineer before I purchase one?

I love your ultimate chess set. Nearly everyone in the chess scene does. What we don't appreciate is your rudeness and basic lack of business acumen. You expect the chess world to pay for your mistake. You won't make a new run because you know if you do the yellow ones will remain unsold. Why not try lowering the price substantially on the yellow ones? Then they might sell and you can give everyone what they want.

You don't have "haters"...Please come back down to planet earth. You make chess pieces. You're not a new age mumble rapper.

I mean seriously..."haters" how unprofessional can one be.

Eyechess

Wow, you are a business man and give no credence for a financial balance.

You want him to hire 2 people for PR and testing.

You want him to go ahead and pay for a new run of pieces that will cost a lot of money.

And you want him to lower the price on the product.

Where is this money going to come from to pay for the 2 hires and the piece production while lowering the income on the sales of the product?
Since you are a business man, you need to produce and sell Chess sets and show us how it should be done.

And just because he calls this person a keyboard warrior does not make him wrong about that description.

I look forward to buying the set you will be producing at such a high quality with such a low price, as you say he should do.

@TakeThisPawn Joker said it best. Why so serious? Dude if you think that you can do it better. Put your money where your mouth is. Start your own chess equipment company and compete against Shelby. Battle it out on the free market. Not in a chess equipment thread forum.

@ShelbyLohrman Sort of like this cream color?

LondonDungeon

Complaining about the off-white color of the new version begins in 5,4,3,2,1...

AlphaMelon

How about a yellow butter-ish color instead?

LondonDungeon

There's be some real tear jerkers then.

ChuckVinson

Off-white is the correct color, not bright white.

KnightsForkCafe

DGT has hit the correct color for their plastic set. Has that brick mortar color for white.

KnightsForkCafe

I think that if Shelby can get the same color DGT has for their plastic set. It should be a coming together moment. happy.pngcry.png The OG UCP sets to me had a ting of yellow in them. Not as bold or bright as the current butter yellow UCP sets but non the less. It was yellow to me when I had an OG UCP set. Shelby if you are reading this post. Try your best to get the same cream/off white color DGT plastic sets have. You should have many more happier customers in my opinion. Hell I would even get one if they have the same DGT color.

LondonDungeon

@Snooper420 Sounds like the only half and half y'all are getting is from your local dairy section at the grocery store.

Just to be clear, my preference would be for a set where all the white pieces are the same color

And why is it always dairy? First butter, now milk and half and half. What’s next? Goat cheese?

I’m in for one whatever flavor you choose Shelby, as long as the dark side is still licorice!

Eyechess

Note that Shelby said he was thinking of that idea, not that he would necessarily do so.

I believe he will be going for the color of the original Ultimate plastic.

Eyechess

The original color was highly popular.

I believe he will produce a color similar to that, at least.

LondonDungeon

He may not be able to a 2 color run without placing 2 full orders. And I may be in the minority but I like the off white cream color.

At the end of the day he's not going to be able to make everyone happy and someone will feel butthurt. Then unfortunately this thread will continue on until the end of days.

What ever Shelby comes out with. I have the final say as to if I want to purchase it. Shelby doesn't owe me anything. Just like I don't owe Shelby my dollars if I don't like his product(s). Quite simple. Fandom is like a cult and demands the creator to make it how they want. Feels that the creator owes them. A sense of entitlement. Make sure that you are not in the cult of Fandom. If you are. May want to re-evaluate yourself and see why you think and behave in such a way.

LondonDungeon

I have the new version on my list. If it's not the color I want, I could wait. I'm still happy with the buttery set. Plus there's another set on my list. That's a custom wood set I'd like to have made. I know I'll grab a UCP v.3 eventually. I just hope it's not tan/natural.

KnightsForkCafe

@MikeDoolzinski If Shelby could make it the same color as the DGT plastic set. I would most definitely purchase the new colored version. However if it is the same as the OG UCP color. I will take a pass on it. I prefer the butter yellow over the OG yellow. If a toned down yellow is going to be the new color. We will just have to wait and see.
