I just opened my Ultimate Chess Set that I won here Ultimate Chess Pieces Giveaway @grownupboy and @ShelbyLohnman Thank you. It is better in person than the photos. The off-white color is very pleasing and the pieces fit in the hand well. The weighting is balanced and solid. Quite pleased!

Congrats on the win. The 2020 Fischer Ultimate is the standard all other plastic sets will be judged by.

Agree about the photo. I thought about posting one until I saw this one.

Mr. Lohrman there is nothing wrong with the knights. The shape comes to a  blunt point at the top. It pokes my palm because of the way I hold it when I move the place. My dad just  sanded it down now so it is smooth and round now.
thank you for offering new pieces. I think it actually looks better rounded then the way iit was before.

You say that you are in Middle School.  I suggest you learn from this.  First you should learn to not write or post so quickly in a public forum about any product you own that does not work for you the way you expect it could or should.  Taking a moment or so and realizing this is a problem that you only have would stop a complaint as if the product was flawed or defective, which this one is not.  In plastic molding there often can be little bits of plastic sticking up from the molding procedure.  And in the vast majority of cases, as in this one, these small bits are easily removed with sandpaper or even something like the edge of a thumbnail.  Yes, this is minor at most.

Hi,  I only check into this thread from time to time.

A summary of where things stand with availability, weight and color would be handy along with how to order periodically in the thread would be  helpful.

Questions:

Where has the white pieces coloration topic landed?  That is, I believe I saw the ability or maybe it was simply availability to have "very white" pieces.   Are we now close to the original color as an option or is it, as I saw some time ago in the posts here "too yellow".

My primary interest is in getting a few sets having the original color but I may now choose to go with all white if we're not heading towards the original color.   Where are we now and where are we going regarding availability and closeness to original color?

For color comparison to the original Ultimate Set check out Post #989 by ChuckVinson on Dec 17, 2020. There may be other images. I just know of this one off the top of my head. Link Below:

The product is defective because the top of the Kight comes to a point and I am not talking about a sharp edge because of molding  it is a stupid design where the top of the Kight comes to a point  when you pick it up it presses against your palm.  People like you are the reason why people in chess club always get picked  on. <<deleted by mod>>no name calling or personal attacks.

Wow, you need to grow up in many ways.

I have not insulted you but pointed out an educational opportunity for you.
Your response is to insult me.

LOL at Eyechess thinking he's in any position to give life advice to a teenager.

Even though I own the Butterball (V2) and the Ultimate Sheesham, I still won't give up my Ultimate original (V1) for one reason -- size. I play mostly offsite in coffee shops, etc. where table space is at a premium requiring the use of a 2" chessboard, which fits the original set to a tee with coverage percentages of 78.5% for the king and 56.3% for the pawns. Trying to squeeze the new set onto a 2" board and those percentages balloon up to 83.5% and 62.5%, respectively, which is a bit crowded for my tastes.

Having three different Ultimate sets may seem redundant, but each set plays best on a different size board. The original on a 2" board, as discussed above, the Sheesham on a 2-1/8" board, and the new version on a 2-1/4" board.

Speaking of "the original," I have a set I picked up as part of a package back in the 90s or early 2000s; it was a chess bag, a roll up board and a set of ultimate pieces from Excalibur. Were these real, or were they the oft alluded to "rip-off" pieces made in Mexico?

ChessAuthor,

When in doubt, compare your set to the original. Below is the dimension table for the original Ultimate set. For a quick check weigh the entire set to set if it's at or near the 52 oz. listed below. It's doubtful a cheap Mexican knock-off would go to the trouble of matching weights.

@loubalch, Thanks for the tip. I don't have a precision scale handy, but I'm sure I can track one down. Thanks again.

Haha I think many of us in this thread can relate to having redundant sets...

Neither my HoS Reykjavik set, in white & red, as well in camel & black, nor my HoS Marshall set, in camel & black, stopped me from buying an Ultimate 3.0 set!

I've been a big fan of the HoS sets, which were a cut above all others on the market, in design and durability, but the Ultimate 3.0 is my new go-to, when gifting sets.

You can even gift it to children so long as they've finished teething.

For me the best pieces - board combination:

Finally decided I needed the new version of this set. Ordered from Amazon US.

Clever! Not so long ago I asked for a shipping quote from amchesseq and it was 65 USD. Through amazon.com it's only 36 USD. Is this the same set with the new improved weighting?

I believe so. The shipping charge from Amazon even includes expected customs charges.

That's a win/win for Shelby as he still gets the sale and lets Amazon take over the responsibility for shipping etc.  IIf the set gets lost or damaged in shipping it is on Amazon. Amazon packs it up, labels it, and sends it to you. Of course, ACE pays a fee to Amazon for this. Amazon pays a lot less for shipping outside the USA because they do a volume no one else can compete with so they get the lowest prices with the shipping companies. That is the way it works.
