Unidentified King and Queen

Hello,

I just bought a chess set at a garage sale. At first I thought it was a variation of Staunton, but when I got home, the king and queen pieces were different. I have not seen an example of it on any chess equipment website, nor any image of chess pieces elsewhere. They are both the same height. One has a bell shape top, which almost reminds me of a Japanese or Shogun helmet. The other has more of an ovoid spherical top. They both have a short pointy tip at the top of those. Does anyone have any idea what style this chess set is, and which one is the King and which one is the Queen? There is not much design to either of them, and either could pass as a pawn for a taller more ornate set.

Could you provide pictures?

And also give us the measurements of the pieces, especially the King height.

I will try to put up pictures. Thanks for the help so far.

Both the King and Queen are the same height: Aproximately 3".

Frank: They are not quite like what you showed.

Typical chess set that was made in Yugoslavia,Subotica from 1950 to 1990.

Thanks for your help. Which is the king, and which is the queen? They are both the same height. Also does this style have an official name?

Queen is the one with a ball on top and the king is with the spike, that’s because the queen is actually promoted pawn.If you look at some Victorian era sets you will see that almost all of them have queen’s with ball on top.

An interesting set - particularly the bishops. As for which is the King and Queen ??? Maybe you'll just have to pick one and go with it.The only image I have found of a Yugoslavian crown doesn't help!

Thanks for the help everyone.

Nadin: Great! That explanation will always help me remember which is the Queen.

Also interesting that the queen is considered a promoted pawn. Just like a commoner can become royalty if she marries a king.

Still would like to know if this set has a name for it.

It’s some kind of late Austro-Hungarian style

Thanks again!

I just looked it up. I saw a set in which the queen was taller than the king.

I would call this a coffeehouse or Vienna set even though it's not quite from there. It looks like one to me.

I have a little travel version of this but now I wonder if I've set up the King and Queen wrong. I thought at the time the taller was the King and also the top is a bit different from what is here so maybe it's not the same thing, from Romania, I thought.

can't seem to post images into chess.com anymore. http://www.tykroll.com/chess/coffee/wientravel/wien4.JPG

(Frankhelwig seems to have posted a picture of an actual Austrian Coffeehouse style King and Queen)

Thanks tmkroll. That is pretty much it. It looks like what I have is some kind of common set made in Yugoslavia, called either a Viennese, Austrian, and/or coffeehouse style. I don' know what the standards were on these, but looks like it was made with some router over whatever piece of wood they had. Lots of inconsistencies between the pieces but I think it gives it a nice old-world charm.
