Unused Chess Table at Work

I have never seen anybody use this chess table where I work. I'm not sure what they covered the vinyl board with. The drawer is perfect for the pieces. I'm tempted to put an inexpensive chess clock in the drawer set to G/10. It would probably never be seen. This is a great little table.

The pieces are hollow and cheap yet not so thin you could just crack them. You could probably even step on them. I haven't been able to find anything like them. I just see solid pieces for sale. Somebody could steal them and they could easily be replaced they are so inexpensive.

Unless you are the one who set it up, someone else enjoys chess as well?

I would set the table to various openings and see if someone plays a continuation, or a mate in two puzzle and put a paper that says “find mate in two, more tomorrow” and see what transpires?

I have reviewed a couple of games on it in the last four years. I have also played against Stockfish on it. Somebody abandoned a magnetic travel board in the drawer. I set the board up for the picture then swept all the pieces back into the drawer. I thought about doing what you said setting up positions. People like to put their coats and bags on the table which annoys me. Makes me want to set up stanchions with a red velour rope cordon around the table with a sign that says, "reserved for chess players."

Perhaps offer to buy it … or rescue it… take it home… “Hey folks, I love chess - if it’s not being used, can I take it home - better at my joint than being a coat rack here!”

Maybe that will draw other players out of the woodwork for a game … or they just say good idea … it’s yours!

I thought about rescuing it posting this. It also makes me want to make my own table. The drawer is excellent. It could hold bigger pieces and I think a good chess clock. Most people you ask to play think you know too much chess which isn't true in my case. I suspect the players that set this up have retired. It's sort of an ancient alien technology left behind for the rest of us to put our coats on. My business has been around for over a hundred years so who knows how long it has been there.

I would be eating my lunch at that table if I worked there. I don’t mind playing both sides.

I did brush some crumbs off the table to take the picture. It didn't bother me. I carry hand sanitizer.

I guess the table does get some use at least.

I should put some snacks in the drawer. That will get people to play.

This thread is making me smile after a day’s work. Love it!

It's small compared to the pool tables, ping pong table and foosball table in the same room. Just a tiny little table over to the side of the room. Nobody ever puts their coats and bags on the pool tables. That would be a rec room fowl big time. Oh but the chess table, who cares about that?  What even is a chess table? Does anybody remember where this thing came from? I've been here forty years and I don't remember. The old-timers told me something about the building being built around it. Some sort of old indian artifact or something like that.

😆

We just had a large power outage in Melbourne …could this be related to the talk of alien tech? I took my phone upstairs to discover more of the said tech, and some disrespectful human’s attire … hmmmm… 🤔… it could be worrying but alas the attire is mine!

Wits-end

I’m fairly certain i know what will happen. You’ll tire of the coat rack…. I mean the table. You’ll move it outside and set it by the road with a “Free” sign attached to it. Of course, @Powderdigit will be the first to happen upon it and take it home where he will refinish the table, post pictures, and we’ll all be envious (and happy for him). 🤣 ha, just a bit of fun…

Seriously, thank you for posting this. Keep us in the loop as to how the Unused Chess Table saga develops.

I think the old indian artifact story is just a cover for the truth that this table is ancient alien technology. It is a feature of ancient alien technology that it should not be displaced. Even if it were removed from the property you would probably be cursed like Howard Carter and his crew after they found King Tut.

This table is pretty secure. My company has a contracted police department with a $50m annual budget. We also have a sizable armed and kevlared security force. And then, we contract additional squishier security to patrol the divisions. Also, there are over 40,000 cameras on the properties. We are one of the biggest property owners in the county with $4b in the bank. Plus we get 1/2% revenue from county sales tax.

Indeed, the aliens picked a secure place to put this table. This business will be around a thousand years assuming civilization last that long. Only the county jail has more security. The aliens probably put one there too.
