loubalch, you are one that has been on this forum longer than I have.  I started coming here in November of 2014.  Your posts immediately helped me quite a bit.  In fact I bought at least one set and a couple of boards because of your posts.  I still recall and keep in mind the perfect proportional piece sizes for the golden dimensioned set you put forth.
There are times I get weary of these negative nabobs.  That’s all.

QtoQlevel3, let me know when you go.  I believe I will accompany you on the exit.

Yeah, this is a case in point, schmuck.

By the way, have you learned yet what the various models of Dubrovnik sets are, or do you still ignore all the information that has been shared here?

Oh yeah, post some pictures of your chess sets, even though you have never done so yet.

Let’s see, you only post negative and leading things.  You don’t post reviews of any equipment.  Yeah, let the evidence point out the real troll here.

I am not joking...GOOD BYE!!

You are not joking?!?  What are you going to do if I stay?  Yes, you are a trolling schmuck after all.

As the old saying goes, "it takes two to tango." It also 'takes two to argue;" and when it comes to trolls, I don't dance, or argue. I make a concerted effort to live my life outside the drama triangle. It's less stressful that way. . . and easier on the blood pressure. happy.png

Getting back on topic, I am looking forward to see this this nee Dubrovnik set from CB.  They have really upped their quality and maintained prices that are not high.

Why would they announce a new set without teasing us with pictures, especially the knight? I shall 'curb my enthusiasm' until the unveiling. If CB has one weakness when it comes to reproductions, it's the knights. They never seem to get them quite right. Just look at their current crop of Dubrovnik knights. Close, but no cigar!

Lou, what do you think of the dimensions of the original 1950 set?

I have always said I do not think the original set will play as well as the later versions.  That was based on my opinion.  The knights all look too “closed” to me, making handling it not so nice or easy.

Before Noj came out with their Minceta, I was looking for a durable design.  Gregor told me that he thought the Dubrovnik II set handled and would hold up better.

I like the looks of the Staunton Castle version.  I am looking to see if CB will come out with something more of what I have in mind.

Eyechess,

Just got the Staunton Castle 1950 Dubrovnik set and I love it! Super quality, knights fit the fingers very comfortably. Love the stubby rooks, and the accurate number of indentations in the queen's tiara. Is it a perfect reproduction? Probably not (what is?), but it's close enough for me. Personally, I favor aesthetic beauty and playability over absolute accuracy. Others may disagree, as is their right.

If you're considering this set, I would recommend checking the SC store on eBay first. I offered them 80% of the listed price and they accepted. This being said, I think the knights are very close approximations to the original 1950 design. If not, I love 'em just the same. Very happy with my purchase. This set has instantly become one of my favorites. Highly recommended, if it meets your aesthetic criteria.

Heads up, The Chess Piece www.thechesspiece.com will be leaving the business and is selling off all their remaining stock. Steve is in the process of simplifying the website. Until he does, navigation may be less than smooth, but worth the effort. I just recently purchased the last of his custom, handcrafted 2.25" James Bennett chess boards (see pic below) for a fraction of what a similar board costs at HoC. thumbup.png thumbup.png thumbup.png

When I spoke with Steve yesterday, he still had three of these gorgeous 2-1/2" Padauk and maple chess boards available for sale. If you're interested, don't dawdle. If you can't reach him by phone, leave a message and send him an email.

Steve, along with House of Staunton, had helped create a market for high-quality chess sets here in the States. It's a damn shame that suppliers in India would undercut companies like Steve's to sell direct over the internet. But hey, business in business, and in the chess set manufacturing business, it appears that ethics have become an elastic commodity!

[Will post pictures of my new set and board when I get a chance. Currently enumerating for the U.S. Census Bureau. Have to pay for my new chess stuff somehow. I'm glad that advancing chronology hasn't diminished my ability to count (at least to 10). Still, I'm a bit disappointed, they made me an enumerator, I really wanted to be a 'denominator.'] happy.png

Eyechess,

Almost forgot, here's the dimension table (as measured) or the SC 1950 set.

It's interesting to note how close the diameters of the king (77.8%) and pawns (56.4%) are to the dimensions in my system for matching chess sets and boards (Kd=76.5%, Pd=58.6%). The Deviation factor measures how close a chess set is to the standard I came up with. Calculating the Deviation:

Kd = 77.8% - 76.5% = 1.3

Pd = 58.6% - 56.4% = 2.2

Deviation Factor = 1.3 + 2.2 = 3.5 (a dimensionless number)

Believe it or not, there's a method to my madness. It also helps when you have OCT (that's T for tendency, not D for disorder).

Hi Lou, Great calculation of the Dubrovnik set. After using the CB chat, when I asked about the size, the answer given to me was a 3.75" King. The launch date is in October.

It's a shame to see a business shutting down. thechesspiece.com used to be the leaders of chess industry in the last decade, however, of what I've observed is that they never tried to update themselves. If I'm not wrong, they haven't updated their website since 2010.

On the contrary, HOS and chesshouse has beautifully countered the onslaught of Indian businesses. It would be better for Steve to sell off his business rather than shutting it down. But everyone has its own priorities. My best wishes with Steve!

Now that's how you continue a thread guys!

Ignore those who intentionally try to inflame....because,after all,we are all just "bits and bytes" here.

Btw...QTO....I got a stern warning from the administrator because someone asked what a good first chess book for beginners was and I recommended "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Chess".

That was the first book I read and really enjoyed it......The admin. must have been into a different hobby, because that is considered a classic.

Since I am a paying member on Chess.com I shot back a not so nice response, defending my innocuous and perfectly fine recommendation......Got a "so sorry message" a day later. They claimed the computer needed a change, because it keyed in on the word "idiot"......Ha!

Interested to see any reviews on this. Just ordered a 10in travel set from Chessbazaar as part of their Labor Day sale this weekend, so I’m curious to find out what type of quality and customer service to expect.

Their customer service has improved greatly over when they first began. Recently had to have a piece replaced, no resistance, no hassle. The overall quality of the sets and their QC has improved as well.

Must have been hard to shave that horn off the knight, considering how long it took them from announcement to eventual release.

Lol! And thanks god the knight is finally shorter than the bishop this time! 🤣

I like the new look though. Looks much more balanced. I got one on order! 😃
