Using Red Pieces in Tournament Games. Your Opinion? Post Your Red Set Pictures

Red and Natural lacquered HOS 4.4" Morphy set:
Gorgeous set Robert, I love the lacquered pieces and would have no problem playing a tournamnet game with them as long as the board had a flat finish

As to using them in tournaments, I'd likely allow them as a TD. They're often used in FIDE events in Europe. I might disallow the BCE or the HOS Empire designs if a player objected, but because the design is only abstractly Staunton, not because of a red color. I'd disallow a red and black set.
I concur with your points

Why, thank you for asking! I bought it as a second from HOS, I think it was classified as a "Contemporary I" or something at the time. Ebony and maple, 2.25" squares. I really liked the red border, and bought it specifically for red pieces, though at the time I only had the red and white HOS Windsor. We must have had peanut salt on our hands when we used it, though, and it began to wear our fingerprints on the frame. And a couple of the squares began to crack. So I sanded it down, repaired the cracks, and refinished it. I liked it so much it took my Ferrer glossy black and bird's eye maple veneer board, sanded off the finish, painted on a red border, and refinished it with hand-rubbed satin polyurethane. It appears in lots of my pictures with red pieces.

The darker reds are fine with me. The brighter reds like at the top of this page are approaching borderline for me, but I would prefer that to black and white pieces on a black and white board.
Way bigger problem with something like the BCE pieces that are not staunton design that people suddenly are drooling over. Would love for that trend to stop.

Gorgeous set. Would you care to play a tournament game on the same set in black lacquer?

What do tournament players use these days?
The only tournaments I've attended were at a club where players mostly use the club sets -- those cheap plastic Chinese sets that are everywhere now.
Personally I'd object if someone put a red set in front of me.

I'll drool where I want to (and at my age, where I can't help it). Like I said, I'd probably disallow it and other abstract designs as a TD, even though I'd play with it as a tournament player. (But not the Empire set, whose knights I don't like so much.) I think I'd disagree with you that BCE is not a Staunton design. Inasmuch as the Staunton design derives from the figurines in chess diagrams, I think Jonas's design captures the essence of the Staunton design, while paying homage to the Dubrovnik expression of the Staunton design. I read much of maintaining the sweep of the stem above and below collar lines in another excellent forum on Jaques pieces. Well, Jonas's S1 pieces express the sweep even as they dispense with the collars.

Chuck, I used a early HOS Player's Series black laquer set for years. It's still my skittles set. Good point. I might have to reconsider.
Bob, it could be that the effects of the bright red and shiny lacquer combine to greater effect than black and lacquer, and that your acceptability line falls in between.

:)
Yeah, I have no real problem with you liking them. I just hate them and hope I don't have to ever have to put with playing with them. We will agree to disagree on the staunton design thing.

We use these outdoors frequently. Seems our family camp is divided. The younger members like them the most. The older members prefer the traditionally colored look, of wood of course. These pieces are clubies and are pictured here on a big square 23 inch board.
Are you adopting?

I cook, have many nice sets and boards, and play a decent game, when you reopen applications.

We're hoping to have some vacancies as members leave now and then for parts unknown. We will keep you advised in the future. You're welcome to put in a early application to determine your credit score though and we're sure you'll pass the general felony and drug test requirements LOL !
oh, just spoke with the old man, he said ya could always sleep on the couch though
that is funny D2, in another thread I used the same pic in the attempt to convince Carl to produce is jaques repro in deep red, what do you guys think about it? I would love it

Sure would be something, even if it was bone to meet those ivory import bans that exist.
Our guess probably would sell like crazy ioho.
