WANTED: Chronos Chess Clock (Button - Red)

Sort:
gorilla_bob

Hello,

If you have a LONG body Chronos Chess Clock (with buttons), I would like to purchase it from you.

NOTE: It must be LONG and it must have buttons.

NOTE: Any color will do as long as the center button is red like in the pic.

Must be working with no issues.

See pic.

I will pay you for this so let's talk.

Any particular reason you want the GX?

A painted red longbody would be a thing in sexiness, if you can find someone to do the job for you.

The main problem with the GX is that if you use move counter, and then the clock gets out of sync with the board (someone hitting it not on move, or an illegal move+press), you can't edit the move counter at all. This is a pretty massive flaw. Also, for FIDE increment, you're supposed to get the increment before you make the first move, but the clock doesn't allow you to change seconds in hour based time controls (or past 99:59), so you have to literally start the clock, immediately stop it, then add the increment to each player (and this can be annoying or even not allowed if you don't communicate it first). The DGT clocks add the increment immediately, and the longbody can (once again) edit seconds before game and have it saved to a preset.

The longbody clock allows you to edit the move counter after a game has started.

The only benefit to a GX compared to a longbody is the ribbon connector issue is fixed on all newer GX's (it has a latch now), so you won't have to deal with the number digits fading from oxidation over time (most local electronic repair shops can't service these connectors if they're directly soldered to the flex ribbon rather than with a molex/flip type JST connector.

Falkentyne,

You are right! I was thinking GX because it was the only option they had that had RED in it. But I would have preferred getting the LONG. Let me change the posting.

Thx!

I don't think the longbody ever came in red. I know blue ones existed (since I bought one) and there was a yellow (goldfinch) for a very limited time a LONG time ago, but almost all models were either black or biege. So the only way to get one in red is to take it to a professional paint shop, unless you have the skills to do it yourself. There are none available from any normal shop at standard prices, just ebay charging 2-3x as much as they're worth, and I would avoid that, because the longbody clocks (as I mentioned above) all have the directly soldered/pad printed connector which *will* degrade with time (not if, but will), eventually causing digit segments to fade.

There may be some sort of way to protect against this, without damaging the clock, but you would have to ask someone who actually services these connectors. PS4 controllers have the same kind of connector, and one shop said that when that connector wears out, it's literally impossible to fix (you need equipment specialized in repadding these).

There was a post years ago of someone who painted their longbody a very beautiful purple. Very impressive work.

BTW, house of staunton has GX clocks in stock again, but the only color in stock is black (red is out of stock). No longbodies anywhere.

I picked up a long body Chronos off ebay for $150. I'm not sure but I think this is a good deal given the fact that they don't make these clocks anymore.

Going to be taking it apart and then spray painting it with this bad boy:

Who was the seller /link for this clock? That's a rather fair price.

All I've ever seen on ebay are people scalping for $300-$500 for these clocks (pretty sad when the display LCD cable connection will eventually fail on all of them, including ones that were sitting in boxes unused, in new condition).

Also how are you going to avoid getting paint on the LCD displays? I would think that you would need manual brushing to avoid accidents, but I know nothing about painting.

I do know that the LCD panels can be detached from the metal casing (you have to undo two screws on two posts), but this creates tension on the ribbon cable, and the segment by the LCD can fail as well, not just the part that attaches to the mainboard. So be VERY careful with this.

When you do finish the job, be sure to post pictures of your work.

Looking forward to these

Yes but when is it going to be released and for sale?

In the video for the new clock that is coming out, it wasn’t giving the 30 second delay like it should have. Also, I don’t like the manner in which the clock lists the number of moves made on the screen. For example, when the clock is started for Whites first moves, it shows 1 which makes it seem like both players have played one move but neither player has played any moves yet.

Also, in another one of those videos for that clock, it wasn’t giving the increment time for move one.

Hopefully these things are fixed before the clock comes out.
